Do you have one of those tools that you put the big chain links together with?

No we sure don't. To connect the links, hold 1 of the links with vice grips, turn on its edge, let that link rest on something solid (anvil, piece of steel or brick etc) Then align the top link over the bottom link being held with the vice grips, slide the 2 links together by tapping with a hammer.
