OK Folks, I've got a good one for you. As I don't see a specific John Deere garden tractor thread I'll post on this one. My '67 JD 112 started shutting off last winter after about 5-10 minutes. I changed the coil and installed a new condensor to no avail. After it sat awhile (cooled off) it would start and run for a while, then die. No spark.
All summer long, it ran OK, but didn't seem "quite right". Anyway, now with the MA cool weather, it started quitting again and wouldn't start till the next day. Even if I shut it off before it died on it's own, it would not restart. By the way, this tractor has the Tecumseh HH100 engine w/the automotive style points, condenser and coil ignition.
Well, last night I removed the frame upright so I could look in the points compartment and, lo and behold, the points were stuck open. I pushed on them, they closed, and I started the engine. It ran perfectly for about 5 minutes, then quit, so I went to bed,
Today, if you're still with me, I found out the little pushrod that runs off the cam and opens the points is sticking in the hole that it passes through. It appears to be made of some materel like fiberglas but seemsto swell up from moistue such as oil, which causes it to stick in the hole. I can push the points and the tractor runs perfectly. (But it's kind of hard to operate the tractor while helping out the points spring)
Bottom line, have any of you heard of this particular problem and is there a fix without tearing the engine down. Oil or silicone spray seem to worsen the problem and it's not easy to access the point box without taking part of the tractor frame off. I tried pulling it out w/longnose pliers but it must have a head on the other end. Hope I can get some advice on this.
