Yep! Check the condition of the old tubes first to see if replacement is warranted or not. Sometimes it's obvious they are crap and need to be replaced but often it's just a little problem that a patch or replacement valve will fix at a much reduced cost. If you are going to do your own tire removals, you might need a tool like the one shown here, in addition to a couple of good tire irons. He says it is worth the money, almost $200 Canadian but it has to be looked at as a long term investment. It fits rims from car & truck size up to large farm tractor size.

I had a flat this spring on a rear and since I've tubed each tire (very old turf tires puncture easily) except this one, I assumed it would need a tube. Had the tire store break it down and we found a tube with 24 patches! I was very tempted to add #25 just for the bragging rights, but the tire store is far, and well a real pain to deal with. so I sprang for new tube. With mounting, it was about $50 if I remember right.

If I break a tire down and find patches already on the tube.. if I hav ethe money in my pocket for a new one.. i usualy put a new one in.. I have been hard pressed before and patched a tube in my shop and got back intot he field due to time. or lack of new parts though.. do as you have to.. etc..

My son is in the process of putting new tires and tubes on my fathers 34 Ford. I helped him take the old tires and tubes off, some had 20+ patches on them and they were the little orange square patches. My guess is that possibly some were the original 1934 tubes. They have led a sheltered life for the past 39 years, I know that for a fact.
