I am doing the 200 hour service on my L3010HST and was wondering how the heck you replace the trans and hst filters without having an environmental disaster in my barn. I have Super UDT in there and don't want to change it and the manual says to change it at 400 hours anyway.

The parts guy at the dealership said I might lose a gallon while changing but since it was Saturday we couldn't ask the mechanics. I figured I would just put one of my big oil trays under the filter and try to do it fast. But what about the HST Strainer that you take out and clean and replace?

Just wondered if any of you have done this before without changing the fluid.

Thanks, Brad

Brad,

I just changed the filters on my B7500 without changing the fluid. It's not that big of a deal. You do lose some, but not significant amounts. You just need a wide mouth oil pan.

Here is a caution. The two filters on my tractor have different threads. Make sure you know which one goes where. I un-screwed one side and was lightning fast ready to put the new one on. Only problem it was the wrong filter and would not screw on. Lost a lot more fluid than I should have. Fortunately the right one was within arms reach, lubricated and ready to go.

Brad,

I believe that you will need to drain the HST oil to change the filters. I am coming up on my 200 hour service for my L3410. Two clean 5 gallon buckets should do it.

A wide oil pan, a readily available filter, and quick hands work just fine - I lost about 1/4 gallon, changing the filter at 50 hours. At 200 hours (about 2 years, at the rate I use the tractor), I may just replace the hydraulic fluid and filters - that will take the previously mentioned 5 gallon containers. That said, many of our local farmers are in the habit of draining off all the fluid, straining it (I've asked why the strainer - seems there's a modest amount of crud that doesn't come out until you drain the whole system), and pouring it back in, with a new filter, and they never replace the hydraulic fluid - works for them, but I have no personal experience to verify such.

You should be able to change both filters by changing them quickly and losing a minimum amount of oil. There is no way you can clean the strainer without draining the system. At the 50 hour mark my strainer was clean, I will not clean the strainer again until the 400 hour mark when the fluid is changed with the filters as was done at the 50 hour service.

Thanks everyone. I will change the filters out and leave the strainer. Mine was clean at the 50 hour mark too. The parts guy sold me a gallon of Super UDT to replace what I might lose but he said I would'nt need that much. At least they were honest and didn't try to sell me a whole bunch of that stuff telling me I needed to replace it all. I will give it a shot Friday or Saturday and see what happens.

I changed my filters last night and it was a piece of cake! I was fretting about losing all this oil and it was very minimal. I lost a half gallon at most. Thanks everyone.
