2000 John Deere 4400 Tractor 4wd

I am about to purchase the above tractor. It has 793 hours on it and the only wrong with it that I can tell is that the gear shifter is very stiff, and it won't shift into the gears by pulling back. It hits the housing around it before the gears engage. You can shift into the forward gears, but that's very stiff also. The owner says that it's a linkage adjustment. Does anyone have any ideas on what my risks are here? Thanks!

The 4400 series are great tractors...I have a friend with one and I've put a few hours on it myself

As far as the shifter goes, the linkage could just need lubrication, or the shaft where it enters to tranny case. I have heard of only one catastrophic failure regarding the range shift, and it was detailed in THIS thread.

Thanks. It turned out to be the bearings. The dealer just lubricated them and sent me on my way.
