2001 F250

seems high but around here that is a hard truck to find, local dealer has had several that brought big money. I over paid for my last truck but it had 7.3 and that is what I wanted and a new one was over 40k more. If you buy it just dont tell anyone what you paid.

It actually the changes in 2005 that make the difference for you, the GVWR's went up with the new tranny, bigger brakes and heavier rear frame.

Many 2006 F-250's are rated at higher capacities than 2004 F-350's.

If you want a 3/4 truck try looking for a 1 ton SRW. Ford made a lot of these and they will handle much more weight on the tongue or payload. The tow rating will be about the same as a F-250 but the SRW 1 ton is much more truck.

For example I have a 2004 F-250 and the GVWR is 10,000#. Weighs 7,500# so the payload or tongue/pin weight is 2,500#

I also have a 2006 F-350 SRW and the GVWR is 11,500#. Weighs 7,600# so the payload or tongue/pin weight is 3,900# Much more truck.

Both trucks are otherwise identical. 4x4 Diesel Short bed Extended Cab with Auto trannys.

Very well may be but the trucks of the late 80's early 90's were very shy in the GVWR dept. I think a lot has to do with the popularity of the diesel engine. These truck gained about 1,000# in the 90's before a chassis upgrade was done so they lacked in the payload dept.

The change in 05 was much needed also. Main area was the front suspension. Really made a difference in the turning radius.

It is high for that year, should be no higher than 12-13 thousand even with the low miles, if you buy it from a dealer you might pay 15 tops
They are all over craigs list you just have to look and be patient
I bought a 2000 w/7.3 in good condition with low engine miles for 6000, I have put 35000 miles on it and love it, it has been trouble free

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. I bought my '00 with 100K miles two years ago for $12K and thought I got a good deal. A couple days ago a friend of mine bought a '99 with 70K miles for $5K. High fuel costs are killing the used diesel market. Patience will reward you with money left in your pocket. Craigslist.

Oh yes there was a big jump when the superduties first started but that second big just in 2005 was what your 2006 truck has over the 2004. The old F350's ie pre superduty with a the crew cab and diesel didn't have much rating left except the dually models.

As a note, the rear rating on my 2001 F350 is exactly the sidewall rating of the pair of original 16" tires. The rims are only rated a few hundreds lbs higher, but the 10.5 axle is rated at something like 9000 lbs. The 2005+ srw F350 on some configurations is rated at exactly the sidewall rating of the pair of 17" tires and the rims have a bit more margin on top of that but the axle is the same other than the larger brakes.

That price doesn't sound that bad to me. Around here, as long as it is not a regular cab, that is about what they go for. Are there any other 7.3s near to compare to?

Oh the dealer WILL come down from that $$$, unless they plan on using it as a lawn ornament :)

On a 10 YO truck, three things matter: Condition, # of Miles and Condition. Even in SHOWROOM condition, what they are asking is 66% of the original price, or about $4k off the price when it was only 90 days old!

Look at CL in your area, if you want a NICE rig, expect to pay close to the top private party price as seen on CL. That will be nealry $10K lower than this STealership is asking I am sure.

Even here in TX where it is considered "low mileage" at 200K, that truck wouldn't sell for even $15k and those shopping are not bashful about pulling out the bills and laying them on the table.

If you think this is the best TRUCK you will find, check KBB, NADA and CL. Then carefully mull over in YOUR mind what the absolute TOP DOLLAR should be for the truck and place that in your hand. On one of the last days of the month go and LAY THE $$$$ on their desk and say "Take it or leave it, this is my BEST offer and not negociatable" (i kant spel it). That has worked for me EVERY TIME!
