2001 GMC Yukon XL (SLT) transmission

Got two new tires and front end alignment today, but......had to have an upper ball joint/control arm replaced. This, after **well know national repair center* suspension inspection declared the ball joints just fine. Makes me wonder if they looked at anything at all - I asked them to check the u-joints and wheel bearings too.

The ball joint was clearly bad - had a lot of play in it. Over $300 parts and labor for one upper ball joint/control arm assembly.

I can tell it tightened up the front end some, especially during turns.

Well, here we are more than 3 years after the original post. The Yukon now has 200,000 miles and is going strong. Transmission and engine are still just fine. So far. Now I am thinking about some more preventative maintenance. U-joints, wheel bearings, maybe some front end work.

it's the main reason i'm keeping my yukon so far..

My wife drives the Yukon and loves it. I drive it every now and then and every time I do really enjoy the comfort and ride. I don't mind having to fix this and that, I just don't want it to leave us stranded some day. When it only had about 70K miles on it the fuel pump went out and I was stranded. I was taking my dog to the vet. Fortunately I was only 4 miles from home, my wife brought me my car, I took her back home and took my dog anyway. I hate to remember it, because my dog died of cancer withing a few weeks after that trip, where we found out it was bad.

A side note, I had to recently put a new(to me) rear axle into my 99 Sub. Since I'm on a tight budget, I balked at junkyard prices (tightwad) of $325 plus $50 core. So I waited and waited and finally on Craigslist I found a guy parting out a Sub and was able to get the rear end for $160. Plus it had G80 locking differential as mine didn't. So I flushed and filled it with fresh lube and got her going. It was about 2 months to find a good deal on a differential. Thanks to cash for clunkers, the junkyards are lacking in these type of vehicles. Something that should be plentiful...Don't get me going.

For some reason, my old differential had been repaired by a shop at about 90K and at 160K the ring and pinion wore out. Lots of metal on the round magnet. In fact it looked like a little chocolate donut. Besides whining real bad, it seems the differential did not like to release the inside wheel in corners. It would push the front end on gravel. Spider gears bad?

our work had a surburban of similar vintage that did the dsame deal.. had a R&P issue..e tc..
