don't places like autozone, etc.. do free scans with a scan tool? any chance one of them has the correct toll to read data like OP.. etc?

It probably will not set a code for an erratic oil guage. Auto zone does do scans but too tell you the truth just because it has a code doesnt mean that is a problem. And it usually only gives you an idea where too start looking for the problem. Believe me, its usually not as simple as a code for a part and you just replace that part and your good too go. (usually)!

Sounds like you described the right area for the part. If you give me year and vin I can pull the wiring schematic and tell you where the wire goes too.It may help, but I still think best plan is take too dealership pay check out and see if it will be covered.

I had the same problem with mine Yukon. Oil Pressure gauge went first, then the speedo. If you can solder, buy a set of stepper motors from Ebay, and have at it. It is not hard, and it is actually pretty easy with the right tools (de-soldering gun). Let me know if you have any questions, as I completed this task in Jan of this year.

A code reader definatally won't help. The MIL is on but the only code is a EVAP solinoid. Nothing to do with OP.

I have to stop at orileys to get a u-joint for this truck and I may go ahead and pick up a mech. OP guage if they aren't too expensive. That way I can confirm whther or not there is OP. If there is OP when my dash guage reads zero, I think i will call the dealer and go from there.

If I install the oil pressure guage, I really don't need the guage dash, so therefor it isn't worth investing much $$ to fix it. But I will question them about the TSB's and if it is under warrenty.

I do have a wiring diagram for it but it doesn't doo me much good. Sure it tells me where it goes but not what route takes to get there. Something like this I think is just easier to start digging through the wire loom and tracing it that way.

If I get the Mech guage in tonight, I will probabally test it tomorrow and let you all know.

UPDATE:

I got the u-joint installed but it looks like the OP guage is a no go.

It seems the new LS style small blocks have some sort of british or metric thread. It is just a little smaller than 3/8NPT.

The sending unit will fit 3/8NPT and tighten down but a 3/8 wont fit the block.

I guess I'll just wait and call the dealer tomorrow.

My guess is its metric. All the mechanical OP gauges I have bought came with 4 or 5 different fittings and I always found one to fit. Did yours not come with multiple fittings?

THAT would just torque me.

I'd be drilling that sucker out to a 3/8 X 24 and rethreading. Just too piss them off.

Nope it only came with 1/8 and 1/4 adapters.

Finding a tee is the problem. I still want to run both guages, That way when I "know" the dash guage is at zero. Then I can verfy pressure with mechanical guage. Which may help if I do opt to take it to a dealer.

I would do a search or check with some engine re-builders and see if there is a second port on the engine you can tap off of. Many will have one.

It is definately your gauges. All will probably do it. I have replaced motors on tach, oil pressure, and speedo. You can get the little stepper motors on ebay at digital dash solutions for like $2 each. Its not real hard to do. pull your cluster take it apart(pretty straight forward). unsolder said motor. solder in new one. there are some pretty good details on full size chevy forum. You can fix all gauges for about $30. Its not nearly as hard as mechanics want you to think.
