2003 new holland tn 65

just off loaded my "new" 2003 tn 65, when i stepped on the tractor i lifted to steering wheel, (to brace myself) about 1/2" now it wont steer anymore, the wheel turns freely and it looks like the shaft is disconnected of the valve!
any suggestion how to fix this?

This afternoon I started to see if could wiggle the steer column back in place, first it came out complete, and when i put it back, it locked in place so i could steer again, is there a lock ring that should prevent the steer column to come out?

The diagram shows two lock rings.
