2004 Polaris Ranger Query

My memory failed me in the earlier missive. My compact tractors take 2.5 litres of oil. The Ranger TM is full with 1.6 litres when the filter is changed, though your results may vary. Sorry about the wrong information.

I really appreciate the lengthy reply and I will visit the Walnut Diary website this evening. At a glance it looks to be very informative, just what I was looking for.

I did jack up the rear and put the UTV on jackstands so I could crawl under it. I pulled the starter out, it wasn't too difficult. Removing the skid plate helps. The gears on the starter look fine. The sound it was making was like it wasn't fully engaging the flywheel. Maybe something to do with the gear assembly not sliding all the way forward. I do plan on keeping it. My new one should be here tomorrow.

While underneath, I found the oil drain. It does looks like something that was designed by the British.

I re-covered both the bench and the seat back yesterday. Bought some black Marine Vinyl which is pretty thick and it came out very nice. Total cost: $36.

I bought some oil too, Mobil Synthetic 0W-40. I read that a Fram PH6017A oil filter works so bought one of those as well. My ATV will use that one if the Ranger does not.

I've copied your notes for future reference. Thanks again.

Dennis

You should see where they put the drain plug on my sportsmans club Cub Cadet Volunteer..Maybe the French on that one :banghead:

Post pics of the upholstery job, I'd like to see it.

0W-40 is what the service manual calls out. The weather around here is usually pretty mild, maybe 30W is all it needs.

Rod, I just read all of your blog entries related to the TM (and a few others). I just now put two and two together, realizing that you are the same person responding to my request for TM help as well as the writer of The Walnut Diaries. You are a good writer. We have much in common. You may find my website interesting although my writing is not of the same caliber (link at bottom). I'm thinking of adding a Polaris TM page to help future owners of this UTV just as your blog helps.

Timswi, I will try to take a picture of my upholstery job and post it tomorrow. I am very pleased with it.

Today I bought a digital clock for the dash, a steering wheel spinner, some eye hooks for the bed and two small polypropylene cutting boards which will serve as backing plates for the headrests which were missing when I bought it. Tonight I will upholster them.

I guess I'm just one of those dinosaurs now....every time I have to buy 5w for the wife's Sorrento of mine I shake my head in disbelief. I also can't get used to the tiny amount of oil engines are using.....my '03 Kodiak takes over 3 quarts.

So if your's calls for 0-40 that's exactly what I would buy too....

Mine is coming up on it's first oil change at 10 hrs...the V-twin 653cc Subaru takes 1.55 quart of 30w.

No Polaris uses 0-40 weight. Use what the manual says... Not what people say on here.

As requested, pics of my upholster job. I bought the marine vinyl 40% off at JoAnn's Fabrics. It was an easy operation. The engine panel is currently off because I am in the process of replacing the starter. The seat back is not yet fastened to the machine, I'm not even sure I have it in the correct orientation.

The UTV came without the headrests so I had to make them. I bought two small polypropylene cutting boards ($2.50 ea.) to serve as the foundation. Installed some T nuts to cinch them to the ROPs and to the sheet steel pieces that I cut to fit the rear of the headrest.

Very nice work on the upholstery! How did you attach the vinyl to the cutting board?

Sorry, it didn't quote as requested:
"No Polaris uses 0-40 weight. Use what the manual says... Not what people say on here."

No one has suggested 0-40, Troutsqueezer said that is what his service manual specifies. I guess the manual could be wrong.......

nice job on the upholstery. I love those cutting boards & use them for all kinds of projects.
