My buddy's f 250 is acting up again, He has had it since new. Now it's out of warranty and it's blowing black smoke at start up ( dealer replaced egr valve and put a fan kit on it last time). He is ready to install ( or remove) the "egr delete kit". The diesal shop he has it at seem pretty knowledgable about the 6.0 problems. My question is theirvany other modifications he should ask about or request. The shop is going to check injectors and some other things that I can't recall now. He would like to keep it at least a few more years but is worried about other expensive repairs in the future with this motor. Thanks for the replys.

Getting rid of the egr valve should take care of lots of the problems. Its the biggest downfall of the 6.0 Also the head bolts can be a issue. I have had two 6.0 and both were trouble free but if I were to get one today a egr defeat and apr head studs would go on day one.

It could be injectors, or a boost leak. How many miles? There are so many things it could be, it takes someone to know what they are looking at to figure it out.

I agree with all that has been mentioned, would also add that the downpipe and exhaust system is undersized...causing high egt's under load, consider installing a 4" exhaust pipe. With the egr delete kit, egr valve delete, head stud replacement, and the 4" pipe, that truck should be bullet proof for many years to come.

What would be an average labor cost to install this kit? I am assuming this is a huge undertaking.

Flat rate for a 6.0 auto trans 4x4 with single alternator is 22.1 hrs for the head gaskets. You are supposed to pull the cab to do them but some people don't. The egr delete should be easier to while you are doing the head gaskets. Guys online are saying 10-14 hours.

I have done these kits in less than 18 hours, but my first one was quite a bit longer than that....I have heard about pulling the cab but have never done it, I have only done 3 complete kits and about 5 egr delete kits.

the dealer will probably also check the FICM voltage.

i have an early 04 6.0L excursion 128K miles, still using an EGR (emissions in CT) has banks exhaust, edge controller, arp studs. blue spring fuel regulator.

truck runs great, although i now have an injector starting to act up. I use mine 95% of the time to tow my 34ft enclosed car hauler (10,500 lbs)

i would definitely delete the EGR if you can get away with it, do the oil cooler and ARP studs. on an 05, if he keeps the EGR, replace the cooler with a bulletproof one.

With my setup, towing my trailer at 70mph through the new england hills my EGTs peak out around 1180. i also would install a monitor to watch oil and coolant temp. Will show a problem before it leaves you stranded.

Is there a check engine light on? Mine recently had the light come on and whenI started it, it would blow a cloud of black smoke. Turned out to be the FICM.
I got my EGR delete from River City Diesel. I thought I blew the head gaskets, but it was the egr and oil coolers that let go. My dealer charged me $2100.00 (Canadian) for labout to do the delete and put the new oil cooler in.

I see it mentioned 22 hours for head gasket flat rate. Your dealer must be better than mine. Mine told me 40 hours (including installing ARP studs.)

I just got a Scan Gauge II and installed it on my dash. Best money I've spent on this truck. It gives you ever gauge you can think of to monitor, plus you can scan and read codes. So far I've solved more problems with it than my dealer has been able to do.

As Viperdave has said.....very important to watch the temperature of the engine oil and coolant. Much more than a 15* delta and you know one of your coolers is plugging.
