Ok well my TC40 is starting to get to me . Sometimes it fires right up . Sometimes ya hit the key 3 to 10 times before it will start . So far i have replaced the key switch. Cleaned battery terminals . They were dirty . Talked to the dealer today and said it might be the starter relays . Sent me home with two relays . 9 bucks each . Replaced the ones he said to . For some reason I don’t think they were a starter relay . Drawing I found on line says the ones he had me change was a headlight relay and a neutral switch relay . Can’t find any starter relays on drawings online .
I also pulled all my other relays and cleaned them . A few were dirty . Cleaned them with contact cleaner . The pto relay looks sketchy . Will replace it next time I can get to the dealer .
So when it don’t start I hear the starter click . I don’t want to replace the starter unless I have to . That joker is expensive.
What do y’all recommend me do next ?

Starter solenoid....

Older New Holland battery cables often corrode inside the terminal where it is sometimes impossible to see; not sure it was an issue with your particular yr / model... You will often have voltage so everything seems good. (gauges & all are working). Then Click... no start...

You can test if there is an issue with your existing battery cables pretty simply.

Remove the negative battery cable & then take a negative jumper cable wire and place it on the bare negative post of your tractor battery. Connect the other end to a solid clean ground of the tractor (bare metal location). Try starting the tractor & see if that makes a difference...

If that doesn't change anything you can do the same process on the positive post. Disconnect the Negative jumper from the Battery terminal. Then using your positive jumper cable attach one end to where the positive battery cable connects to the starter (connect this end first), and the other end to the positive battery post (last). Make sure the jumper cable is not able to arc to near by metal. Now reconnect the Negative jumper cable to the battery & try starting the tractor again & see if that changes anything...

Doing this process you basically bypassed the battery cables on the machine, and then can troubleshoot from there. I wouldn't put any more parts on it till I checked the factory cables... They are a known culprit... even when they look good & you clean the connections...

The starter should have the solenoid (relay) built into it. Most likely the contacts are worn from arcing each time they make contact. How many hours are on it? Do you run the tractor for hours or are you more likely to start it multiple times each time you use it? It looks like you can replace just the solenoid or replace the starter assembly for not too much more. I would look at the terminals on the starter just to make sure they aren't corroded.

Tractor has about 1300 hundred hours. When I run it most of the time I don’t shut it down till I’m done . Some times it’s a few hours some times 5 minutes. New starter from my dealer is anywhere from 229 for a reman or 340 for a new one . I’m not sure if I can replace the solenoid or not. Have not dug that far into it yet. If changing the battery cables don’t help the starter will be pulled and have it tested .
I got called into work today so won’t be messing with it today ,maybe tomorrow.

Before or at least when you take the starter to be tested, have the battery tested or if you have the ability test it. I did not see where you said it had been.
Will it start from either a different battery installed or being jumped?
Did you clean and check both ends of battery cables or only at the battery post?

Think I got it fixed. Ended up replacing the ground wire and putting a new end on the power wire . New terminal posts . The battery had the dang screw in posts .
