Okay, my tire diatribe (I didn't want to do this, but you asked)...

My 5103 has the aggressive ag tread on a too narrow, rear tire. Huge mistake. I missed it when buying and I think one of the ways I got such a good deal on my 5103 was the narrower tires. My father in law has a 990 with bigger rear tires.

Heres' what happens...Loaded rear tires + mud + narrow width = stuck real fast. Even with the rockshaft set really light, that sucker digs in fast.

Moral of the story...If you get a 2WD tractor, get some wide a$& rear tires. I could probably switch out tires and be totally happy with my 5103.

That said, I want industrial tires on my new tractor for a few reasons:
1) Wider
2) Less aggressive on the pasture. I like mowing when it's a little wet b/c that cuts way down on the dust I inhale.
3) I think they look sharper than the ag tires. Just my personal preference.

I'll post when I get the next quote. Or sooner if there's more input.

Hello Chip,

Have you tried Fredericksburg Equipment? I bought my 5203 there for what I thought was a good price. But after dealing with the West Texas ag dealers, any price would look good though. Would be interested which dealer you end up with. May still twist off after I move and don't want to use a dealer in West Texas which will be 200 miles away. Went by the dealership once in Marble Falls, but didn't spend much time there to get a feel for them.

Good luck with your purchase. Sometimes I wish I had 4wd but am going to make myself be satisfied with what I have--gotta quit spending money if I am to retire in a couple of years. Good point about the tires. My hill country place is between Menard and London. Nearly bogged down Tuesday morning.

Best wishes,

gbates.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but Clark tractor in Comanche, TX has 2 5303s with the 522 loader, R1s and 3 SCVs, one has ten hours for $28,150 and the other 16 hours for 27,700. You can see them on the machinefinder web site.

Thanks for the heads up, but I learned the hard way that I need to get exactly what I want so that I'm not going through this again in another 8 months.

Gotta get 4WD this time.

looks like JD went back to the traditional R1 with the new 5003 series. you must have not been the only one who wasn't too fond of those skinny tires. that was my main drawback of buying one of those tractors, i wasn't too sure they would have alot of traction.

Surprisingly, I never read a complaint on TBN about that and I feel like I read a lot of 5103 posts. I sunk my rear tires the first time I used my BB, but I wrote it off to operator error on a new tractor.

I'll be interested to see how a new 4WD 5203 does under the same conditions. I'll be sure to write a review. IF...I ever

all i have ever heard from several 5103 owners was "you run out of traction long before you run out of power" so thats why i related it to your situation. the tires on the 5103 just seemed too small. the 5203, 5303, and 5403 tires were alot wider and taller.

My 5105 MFWD has the 16.9x28 R1 rears. The base tire is the 14.9x28 R1 but the dealer told me that was too skinny. I have never felt my 16.9's were too small. I would also agree with your preference for R4s for your use, as long as you realize you'll be giving up a lot of mud traction. With MFWD and loaded rears (R1 all around), my 5105 is unstoppable in mud far too soft and deep to get useful work done.

My 5103 has 14.9x28s and I would warn anybody against them. Don't know why Deere even does that. (Actually, I know why...cost.)

I'll have to think about R1's. I don't want a new tractor that still gets stuck.

If you go with the 16.9 R1's you'll have a 28" tire instead of 24" R4. That alone will give you more of a footprint/flotation than 16.9X24. Your front tires will be a little skinnier but much taller. I would seriously consider staying with the 28" R1's, they are a lot more tire.
