2008 F350 Check Engine light came on

Don't let a auto parts store scan your truck.
Most don't have a good enough scan tool to check out our trucks.

I have a '97 F Super Duty Powerstroke. The posters on a diesel forum that I visit are in agreement with the above statement. Most say that you need an expensive scanner that plugs into a laptop and I don't think most parts stores are equipped a scanner that works too well on diesels.

It only has less then 50K miles on it.
I just had the oil changed at the dealership.
I know little about diesels, not sure where to start.

Got any ideas?

Thanks
Charlie

I've had more "check engine" lights on my 2008 6.4L than I'd like to admit. I bet it's an exhaust temp sensor. Mine just went out last week. Replaced under warranty.
My warranty only has 7 months left.
VERY concerned.
When I was at the dealership getting it fixed last week they had dozens of Ford diesels with cabs off, hoods off engine front halves removed. The Ford mechanic who works on my truck is a friend of mine. He's pulling down 120K + per year and has told me the 6.4L and 6L will keep him swimming in overtime pay for the next 10 years.

Took the truck to O'reilly's Saturday, they said the were two codes, one was no info available, the other was the turbo flow was under pressured, or something like that. Took it to the dealer on Mandoy, they updated the firmware on the computer to fix it. Not sure when the warrenty runs out, was hoping to find out yesterday. I hope the problem does not return though.

Thanks for all the replies.

Charlie

Thanks for the update, Charlie. Glad it was nothing too serious.

One thing I'm not too clear on from your post. Did the dealer agree with the diagnosis from OReilley?

"...said the were two codes, one was no info available..."

That's the difference between an autoparts store and the dealer. The dealer's diagnostic software is updated as required for troubleshooting and servicing the vehicles - and the auto parts stores aren't unless they're willing to pay a subscription fee to the diagnostic equipment manufacturer. Even then, the updates will lag the dealer.

When a trouble light comes on - take it to the dealer, let them deal with it. I had one on a 2007 that was a very simple code problem that a dealer in Wyoming reset for free as he did not have the new software upgrade "flash" available, but knew what the problem was through the Ford Oasis system.

The Oasis System records the vehicle service through a Ford dealer, the vehicle service information is then available to every Ford dealer which is why service department in Wyoming knew the status of my vehicle as the Oasis report showed the service record from the Albuquerque, NM dealer.

I agree with that.
My check engine lights often have been diagnosed as new problems the local guys can't find.
The other thing, as previously stated is that Ford can install the latest updates to (hopefully) make the truck run better.
