I looked at a gas 2010 this morning. It's been listed on Facebook for several months but I just now saw it. Sheetmetal, hood and fenders are in very good condition. One fairly new rear tire, front tires are new, has the original seat. Talked to the owner by phone and he said the tractor runs but it has problems with the PTO and rear lift doesn't work. I'm interested in the tractor for taking to shows, not for work. Wants $3000, said that's what he paid for it. Worth taking a risk on?

I think I'll pass on this tractor. Repairs may be simple or could be the hydraulic pump.

JD 2010 didn't get nicknamed the sorriest JD tractor ever built by accident. I suggest passing on a non-functionable 2010 for $3k

I couldn't remember whether it was the 1010 or 2010 that had a bad reputation. I'm not going to buy it.

Both had the bad engine design with the engine sleeves being the weak point. The gas engines were a little better than the diesels.

Were any of the ten series as good as the machines they replaced? When did the new generation begin to be better in most ways than the old JDs they replaced? What was the first really good model? I've always wondered.

JD utility tractors such as 2010 were manufactured in Dubuque, Ia. JD 1010/2010 engines with 4 sleeves attached to a plate were one of that models problems. JD Utility tractors manufactured after the model 2010/1010 were relatively good until ind pto & hyd hi-lo supply tubes began failing. These model tractors with a very few exceptions as you probably already know had closed-center hyd's which require different type diagnostic procedures than open center type hyd systems. JD 3010/4010 were manufactured at Waterloo, Ia by totally different engineers were basically good tractors especially considering they originated from a large transition from 2 cylinder engine design. 3020/4020 were better yet. JD rowcrop 40-55 series are even better. My JD 4255 has 12,000 hrs on speed/hr meter with very limited repairs required.

Interestingly, our old JD530 two cylinder also has just over 12,000 hours with few repairs, and nothing major. It came with surprisingly modern sub-systems such as power steering, rear remotes, fully independent PTO, QD loader, & comfortable seating.
But putting in a day on that tractor still leaves a person exhausted. It takes a lot of effort to operate.

JD's major change in design that led to the modern 40-55 series was certainly the right direction to take. No doubt about how much better they are. Good on JD.
