'best in class fuel economy when run by Ford in tests'......ok, what is it?

as for the torque wars, it is so far gone it doesn't even matter anymore. in fact, the others are downsizing their diesels to get higher mileage! Ford in fact, is behind - hence their new "Lion" program.

I don't consider this announcement being "on top" anymore. Otherwise Cummins would just drop a 6C engine in.

Yep, I agree. Ford, Chevy, whatever. You can't beat a Cummins. From tractors to ships to smaller locomotives. .. even pulling trucks. They're hard to beat. Give me less hp and a few more mpg...

Those are impressive numbers for sure! I still would be nervous about having that kind of weight behind a p/u though regardless of brand. Are they going to be putting air brakes on p/u's next? Getting a load moving is hardly the task it used to be. Getting it stopped with all the "EXPERT" drivers on the road really concerns me the older I get. Who's going to be the first one on here to step up and buy the first 100k pickup? lol

The Ford is impressive, it has 4.30 axle gears which is what a truck needs for towing. Wonder what the next Ram Cummins will crank the power up to?

I've had two F-450 pickups, an '08 and currently a '12. The '15 F-450 will be a lot like my '08 because it will have the 19.5" commercial grade tires and the heavy Dana 110 rear axle. The F-450 also has the wide-track front axle which adds to stability but allows the tires to cut sharply for a tight turning radius. Both of my trucks have been premier towing machines and I can only imagine how the '15 will handle a load with the extra horses under the hood.

so Cummins now make trucks? i always thought they stuck to engines?

the amount brand bashing on this forum always astounds me

Does the 450 have a beefier frame than the f350? I would imagine they would come in different lengths also?

That's definitely some nice numbers.

Yes. Yes.

The 450's and 550's are basically five ton trucks with pickup sheetmetal on them. They are very very capable towing machines. The biggest issue with using these trucks is that you will have electric brakes on the trailer. Haven't driven one with the newer integrated controller, but I hope it's better than the old system.

The F-450 pickup only comes as a crew-cab and has the same length as an F-350. The frame is beefed up compared to the F-350 and it will use the heavier drivetrain and brakes that the chassis-cabs use. The F-450/550 use derated engines while the pickup uses the same hp/tq as the other pickups. The speed of the F-450 pickup is limited to 85mph due to the speed rating of the 19.5" tires.

The integrated brake controller can be used with electric or electric/hydraulic brakes. You can select either system with the on-screen menu. My trailers have electric brakes so I can't say how the electric/hydraulic brakes perform.

I have towed electric over hydraulic trailers with my F350 and my factory brake controller. Works great and stops 50% shorter than electric brakes. This is using tri axle trailers with disc brakes.

just refuting 'on top', no brand-bashing intent. I've owned them all. Don't see value to increasing torque in this segment any longer. That is not a brand-specific 'bash'.

So they will be a roadblock to traffic on a lot of the interstates where legal is 75 and actual often is over 80.

Yes just like almost every other F450, F550, C3500HD, F-super, C4500,C5500, Ram 4500 transport truck etc etc. When you have 4.30 and 5.13 ratios 85 mph is an imaginary speed to travel at anyways.

So they will be a roadblock to traffic on a lot of the interstates where legal is 75 and actual often is over 80.

Just tuck in at 70mph with the semi trucks and go.

I drive I-20 daily with a 75 mph speed limit. No problems, stay in the right lane like you're supposed to and let 'em pass. Let the speeders be the bear bait and find Mr. Smokey up ahead.

Folks can pull their rigs at any speed they desire, UNTIL some nut job towing one car behind another with a ROPE, finds the rope broke and the car in back no longer has any forward momentum. Then when the genius doing 80 with his 40ft 5th wheel, behind a 3/4 ton truck realizes that car in front of him is almost stopped on the freeway, and Mr RV slams on the brakes only to find HIS brake connection isn't as strong as he though it was, and he cannot stop that nice 15,000lb 40 ft toy hauler.

I just hope I am well in front of the whole mess when it happens cause those near by are in danger and those behind will be stopped for hours waiting on their tax dollars to clean up the mess of crunched metal and bloody bodies. Then the real fun will begin for Mr speedy RV when he finds out lots of people testify to the nice fellow in the wide brimmed hat wearing a badge, that yes, Me RV blew by them when they were doing 75 in a 75 zone.

Yea the lawyers will have fun with that one and so will the local DA's.

Crap happens often enough when we drive sanely and do our best to insure nothing is hooked up wrong and in good working order. It ALMOST makes one appreciate the 55 mph towing limit some states have, almost.

With new 3/4-1ton trucks costing close to $70K these days, I wonder what they will be in 2 more years? And who can afford them. I know I never will be able to. It was a big stretch for me to buy my 06, I just got. For those that can, I am seriously glad for you, not jealous at all really, but that is a LOT of cash.

Seems to me that when these trucks tow ratings get above 25K or so that maybe they ought to be looking at air brakes?

How do the elec over hyd work? I read one poster said his stopped in half the distance, that would likely be a next step to me, for super heavy rigs.

The key with electric over hydraulic is the disc brakes. Using drum brakes on trailers is crazy to me after converting my trailers to disc. Just like disc brakes have major advantages on cars and trucks the same holds true for trailers.
