Or get a clamp on current meter. That's what I use.

Have yet to see a clamp on meter that was accurate down to miilli-amps.

A test light in series works well.

I have a 2012 suburban that on occasion throws this "trailer brake" message. I have yet to even look at it. It comes and goes when ever it wants and isnt dependant on a trailer being hooked to it. I'm going to check the relays by the sprare tire and the ground.

I have had one for years. It's a Fluke mA clampon current probe that is used for 4-20 mA current loops. They are expensive but I think there are other manufacturers that make cheaper ones.
