"And you flew you Lear Jet up to Nova Scotia to view a total eclipse of the sun" *

*with apologies to Carly Simon. :)
Probably with the wife of a close friend
My daughter goes to SIU in Carbondale, which is in the direct path. They won't have classes that day and have all sorts of plans. The hotels are all full up. I'm not sure when the next total eclipse is but Carbondale is in its path also.

Reading this thread got me remembering... and thinking. My buddy and I made a road trip to Goldendale, WA to view the total eclipse back in 1979. Decided to share the experience with wife this time. I just booked a hotel room in Corvallis, OR (might have been the last one!). Couldn't find anything in Salem! We will make the drive down on Sunday Aug 20 after my son's wedding that weekend. Need to get back Tuesday Morning to get my better half off to the airport.

This video brought back some memories as well...

I was there with my BIL and sister, we stayed at a friends house. That's a great video. We were so skinny back then. :)

Folks can download a free open source planetarium program called Stellarium. There are versions for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. Set the program to use your computer system time, enter latitude, longitude and elevation coordinates then fast forward to August 21st and watch the eclipse from start to finish or fast forward to find out exactly when it will start and end for you. I am just outside the 90% line on the linked map above. This is what Stellarium showed for me (zoomed in). Stellarium

My home in Seneca, SC is in the direct path. I'm willing to rent it out for $1,000/night, 10 night minimum. Any takers?;)

Steve

Way under priced. Oregon State Parks auctioned off a dozen camp sites at Cove Palisades Park, right on the path of totality. They got $4,000 a camp site, which is nothing but a parking spot with an RV hookup.

Oregon eclipse weather report:

The expectation is for 2 million people to show up from Washington and California for the eclipse. That's almost half the population of the state of Oregon. Madras alone is expecting 200,000 people, in a town of 20,000.

Don't expect to find groceries that weekend. Don't expect to be able to get into a restaurant. Don't expect to be able to find a public bathroom, and sewage treatment plants will be overwhelmed. Roads will be so congested they will be impassable to emergency vehicles. People will die from medical emergencies that could be easily handled under normal condition.

Bring your FEMA emergency kit: food and water for 3 days, $500 in cash because the ATMs will be empty, sun screen, and any medications you need. Expect temperatures in the 90s by noon. Buy gasoline early, because the service stations will probably sell out and supply trucks won't be able to get through the congestion. The eclipse is Monday morning, and it is advisable to shelter in place until Tuesday.

The governor has activated the National Guard, which has facilities for dealing with displaced people.

I have a friend in Wyoming who says she has heard rumors of 3 million people coming, which is 3x the population of the state. That's doubtless an exaggeration. Where would they come from? Even so, plunking a million people in the desert with only urban survival skills would be a disaster.

Oops. I forgot to mention the $3,000/night surcharge for utilities (water, electricity, sewer). Sorry about that.

Wow - Guess a few of us saw the 1979 full eclipse

I visited a friend attending University of Idaho to see it, and we all stood out in the common area by the dorms, silence grew as totality approached and just as it got the darkest,
some joker yells out a second floor window Happy - Doomsday and Everybody started laughing .

It was well worth it to experience the eclipse though- when the light goes away in just a few minutes There is (something) to it- that to this day i can't really put into words. Can see why it was such a big deal to the Mayans.

Whew. Glad you spelled "apologies" correctly this time. Otherwise a certain person, whose name must not be mentioned, will show up...

:p:laughing::laughing::laughing:

It's all good. I try to not challenge the master much anymore, having been "burned" several times.. But I got him good once, and he knows it..

Mind your Ps and Qs. My suspension from the POEM Auxiliary will be lifted as soon as I am able to issue ten more citations to scofflaws such as yourself.;)

PS

I am cutting you some slack by giving you just a warning about your abuse of punctuation marks (double periods). Don't let it happen again.

It is one of my trademarks.... part of my "style" as it were... you can't discriminate against a persons "style".

Citation 1. It should be "person's" rather than "persons."

Citation 2. The period should be within the quotation marks.

Two down, eight to go.

I work in Columbia, SC, and live not too far from there. I've already told my boss I don't plan on being anywhere near there that day. They've been estimating over a million people coming here for it. They've been advertising it as the event "bigger than football" since University of South Carolina home football games are the biggest events that happen here. Media is staying with the positive twist to it, not saying anything about how bad traffic will be or that businesses are going to be overwhelmed. I know some businesses are looking forward to it, but others will be closed that day. Some school districts are delaying the start of the school year until that Wednesday I think, others start the week before, but I believe will be closed that day.

And what do I see in the news this morning? An article talking about the hospitals being concerned about cell system overloads and that patients and employees may not be able to make it to the hospitals. At least somebody it thinking about those concerns. I know my eye doctor's office will be closed that day due to traffic concerns.

Also I forgot to mention before, the local zoo will be doing observations to see if the eclipse will have an affect on animal behavior.

It already has had a large effect on one group of animals who are all up in arms about an event that hasn't even occurred yet. :)

Plan ahead...be safe

Special glasses allow safe observation of the eclipse. According to NASA, only 5 companies manufacture eclipse glasses that meet specific standards to keep your eyes safe. Before purchasing, check your glasses for these criteria:

Have certification information with a designated ISO 12312-2 international standard
Have the manufacturer痴 name and address printed somewhere on the product
Not be used if they are older than three years, or have scratched or wrinkled lenses
Not use homemade filters or be substituted for with ordinary sunglasses not even very dark ones because they are not safe for looking directly at the sun

more:

The Sun can be viewed safely with the naked eye only during the few brief seconds or minutes of a total solar eclipse. Partial eclipses, annular eclipses, and the partial phases of total eclipses are never safe to watch without taking special precautions. Even when 99% of the Sun's surface is obscured during the partial phases of a total eclipse, the remaining photospheric crescent is intensely bright and cannot be viewed safely without eye protection [Chou, 1981; Marsh, 1982]. Do not attempt to observe the partial or annular phases of any eclipse with the naked eye. Failure to use appropriate filtration may result in permanent eye damage or blindness!

Generally, the same equipment, techniques and precautions used to observe the Sun outside of eclipse are required for annular eclipses and the partial phases of total eclipses [Reynolds & Sweetsir, 1995; Pasachoff & Covington, 1993; Pasachoff & Menzel, 1992; Sherrod, 1981]. The safest and most inexpensive of these methods is by projection, in which a pinhole or small opening is used to cast the image of the Sun on a screen placed a half-meter or more beyond the opening. Projected images of the Sun may even be seen on the ground in the small openings created by interlacing fingers, or in the dappled sunlight beneath a leafy tree. Binoculars can also be used to project a magnified image of the Sun on a white card, but you must avoid the temptation of using these instruments for direct viewing.

The Sun can be viewed directly only when using filters specifically designed for this purpose. Such filters usually have a thin layer of aluminum, chromium or silver deposited on their surfaces that attenuates ultraviolet, visible, and infrared energy. One of the most widely available filters for safe solar viewing is a number 14 welder's glass, available through welding supply outlets. More recently, aluminized mylar has become a popular, inexpensive alternative. Mylar can easily be cut with scissors and adapted to any kind of box or viewing device. A number of sources for solar filters are listed below. No filter is safe to use with any optical device (i.e. - telescope, binoculars, etc.) unless it has been specifically designed for that purpose. Experienced amateur and professional astronomers may also use one or two layers of completely exposed and fully developed black-and-white film, provided the film contains a silver emulsion. Since all developed color films lack silver, they are always unsafe for use in solar viewing.

Unsafe filters include color film, some non-silver black and white film, medical x-ray films with images on them, smoked glass, photographic neutral density filters and polarizing filters. Solar filters designed to thread into eyepieces which are often sold with inexpensive telescopes are also dangerous. They should not be used for viewing the Sun at any time since they often crack from overheating. Do not experiment with other filters unless you are certain that they are safe. Damage to the eyes comes predominantly from invisible infrared wavelengths. The fact that the Sun appears dark in a filter or that you feel no discomfort does not guarantee that your eyes are safe. Avoid all unnecessary risks. Your local planetarium or amateur astronomy club is a good source for additional information.

In spite of these precautions, the total phase (and only the total phase) of an eclipse can and should be viewed without filters. It is crucial that you know when to take off and put back on your glasses

I'm maybe 20 miles from the southern edge of totality. I'm taking the day off work and will drive about an hour or so to be close to the center of totality.

A lot of other people will be doing the same thing - from 20 miles away, 50 miles away, 100, 200, 300 miles away. A planned one hour drive could take you much longer due to traffic congestion. Be sure to leave early so you don't miss the show.
