Absolutely right!

We found dirt but not metal in the bottom of the bucket of "premium" hydraulic oil. We didn't strain the oil but did handle it so we didn't stir up the dirt in the bottom and left maybe a quart behind in the bucket. I'm playing with the idea of setting up a pump with inline filter to do the next change...kinda like the one I use for bulk diesel fuel.

At the dam when we changed hydraulic oil, and hydraulic filters were reasonable we would filter the oil out of barrel through a home made filtering system before allowing it into the system of tainter valves. On the governor oil systems which contained a couple thousand gallons we filtered the oil through a DeLaval centrifuge first and then a filter press before adding it to the system. Later they came out with filtering systems that ran constantly and we called those kidney machines. You just ran them for a few days on a unit and moved to the next unit in between complete oil changes.

Interesting!

I know a fellow who maintains heavy logging equipment and they use a lot of bulk fluids with filters and I'm going to talk to him about what they think is the best way to filter out of the big tanks. I use filtered fuel for my airplane...learned a lesson about taking pump gas directly into the plane tanks in Alaska...don't do it.

and a cheap pump.

Built one pretty much like second one. Couldn't find a 3/4NPT filter holder so I had to go up to 1NPT then back to 3/4NPT to fit my hose. Pump doesn't work as fast with the filter but at least I should be getting cleaner fuel.

I love Maine in the summer. We used to spend a couple weeks at Greenville on the lake in the summer. Seriously considered retiring there but Idaho won out. Less Winter and no humidity but clams and lobsters aren't as good here.
