It probably was put there last summer by some extraterrestrial life form. When they decode the writings it will say "Beam me up Scottie, there's no intelligent life down here."

Heheheheheheh!!!!! My wife and I were just talking about this the other day. So, let's say there is intelligent life in the Universe that has the ability to visit far away Galaxies. Before they get anywhere near us they will "hear" us. They may decide early on that it's better to just leave that one alone and let it ripen a bit more.....

I confess, I left it there by accident. I completely forgot where I set it down. I remembered I had it in Colorado then I got to Nevada and it was gone.

That's a good link. It's an older article and as always this site dropped a zero but it happened in 1946, not 2014.
What I couldn't get from the article; did they ever figure out that it was a hoax, or is this 2006 article the first time that fact was made public?
