2040

Anyone know anything about these. My neighbor has one that looks like new and would like for me to buy it. I am not sure what cat. 3 pt it has, or the HP. I am not sure what I would do with it but I would like to have it. If I could sneak it home with out the wife seeing it for a while. That is all I need is another tractor. If anyone knows anything about them I would love to hear what you have to say.

I bought a 2040 last year. It's a 1978 model and I bought it from the estate of the previous owner who I knew took good care of it. It's equipped with a 48 loader. Tractor has plenty of power (40) and I couldn't be happier with it. I've been using it for driveway grading and landscaping and I just ordered a chipper for it. Before I bought it, I asked around about how other users liked this tractor and I never heard anything negative about it. It's a great complement to my 2305 which I use for mowing, snow removal, light landscaping, etc. If I get into heavy work, I just go get the 2040 to finish the job.

The 2040 is a great tractor. The specs in tractordata.com is not entirely complete. It says they have an open center hydraulic system, when only the first year had that. The 1977-1982 models had closed center hydraulics. There were also some changes in the '81 & '82 model years. There were some cosmetic changes in sheet metal and decals. (If the decals on the hood have vertical black stripes, you have the newer model). All versions were good, but if I had a choice, I would avoid the first year with open center hydraulics. They can be finicky at times. They were actually a mixture of open and closed components. Drivetrains on these tractors were pretty bullet-proof.
