I am about to purchase the 1046 or the 2042. I like the shaft drive of the 2042 and only need a 42 inch deck as I just have 1 acre to cut. The 1046 has a bigger engine 23hp dual cyl. vs 18 hp dual cyl. and is a lot cheaper, but the quality of the 2042 seems better obviously for an extra 900 bucks. I am going to use it just to mow and pull a small cart and maybe aerate so the 1046 can handle all this, but I keep thinking I should go with the 2042 which has the cast iron tranny and fully servicable hydro any suggestions?

I can't compare the two, but I will be buying the 1046 later this week. I have about an acre as well. I just returned the JD L111 this past week which is the same price as the CC 1046. I've never owned a Kohler engine but I hear they are very realiable and better than Briggs. That is the main reason I returned the JD.

I was in the same boat....I wanted the 1046 for the larger engine and much cheaper.

However after comparing the 2, I'm glad I picked the 2042. The shaft drive is more efficient. I was also looking at JD and was told that the better tractors (i.e. shaft drive, etc) are more efficient and don't need the bigger engine.

the 18hp Kohler v-twin is SWEET. It's extremely smooth and when you open the metal hood (plastic on the 1046) it looks like a car engine.

Plus the transmission has a filter on the 2042 whereas the 1046 doesn't. The 2042 is also beefier than the 1046.

so, IMO, after I compared the 2 side by side, I wound up with the 2042.

Good luck

Tony, if your terrain is smooth, no hills, etc.. you dont weigh 300lbs, and are going to use the machine for just mowing and very light cart duty, a 1000 series would be a good choice. The 2000+ will handle wieght, bumps and hills for years /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

No comparison IMO. I've owned both, a 2002 Cub 1515 and now I have a 2004 2180. The 2180 is far and away the better tractor. Both do their intended jobs as well, but the 2042 feels heavy duty, steering is remarkably better and the serviceability is what all tractors should have.

If you're just cutting grass, then it doesn't matter, take the 1046. If you want something for the long haul, buy the 2042. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
