I finished staining the first coat this morning, and I completed the loft yesterday. The next step is to frame the loft doors in so I can finish the siding...I'm not sure when I will get to that, hopefully this week or weekend.

I was mistaken in my previous posts, stating that the loft was 10x20. It is actually 12x20; I didn't officially measure until I went to get the lumber on Saturday. Previously, I had just eye-balled the trusses and guesstimated. Shows what I know.

Looks good. That loft is huge for that size building.

Love it. I want one just like it. Or two! Fine, high quality work to be proud of. Great job, Seth. Please keep posting pix as you get the grading done, the doors on.

Meanwhile, you should be a proud papa 'bout now, too, right?

Thanks for the compliments. I have been slow in posting, my apologies.

Allen, you are correct, Adelyn joined us early Saturday morning, a few days early. Mom and baby are doing well.

The loft doors are almost framed in, the front loft door is 4 ft wide, the back door is 7ft (two 3.5 ft doors). All of the siding that is up has two coats of stain, and I have started putting up the second story siding. I also have added some structural strength to the purlins to help support the fly rafter.

I'm hoping to make significant progress over the weekend.

Congrats on the new addition. I always thought I didn't want kids, until I had one or two. Best thing I ever did. They are precious. (Did I just use the word 'precious'?)

So, I apologize in advance, but I have to do this... My one standard piece of advise/suggestion to new parents is to get yourself a notebook (simple spiral thing will do fine) and put it and a pen on the counter or table, right over there, close to where you are living day to day, so it's ready to go. When young Adelyn does something, anything that makes you smile or laugh or cry or just gape in awe, jot a quick note with the date & time, her age maybe. Nothing fancy or eloquent. Don't try to get all poetic or make it worthy of publishing (you'll quickly tire of the whole idea). Just put down a few words to jog your memory.

You think, at every one of these little (or big) moments, "That's so cool! That's amazing! I'll never forget that as long as I live!" But you do, because the next minute she'll be doing something else just as cool, equally wonderful and special. Years later you can sit with her while she reads your notes, and you can share the memories the words bring back. She'll love it. So will you.

OK. That's it for the baby advice.

I do actually have a couple of shed questions, as I'm sitting here drawing plans for the permit.

1. I see in one of your last photos, dsc04640, you have four long diagonal braces up in the ceiling of the attic space. How come? I mean, I know what they are for, but do you think you will need them? The roofing, along with the framing and posts themselves, doesn't provide enough stiffness?

2. In post #51, 2nd photo, dsc04575, I can see what looks like roofing felt or some sort of moisture barrier beneath the metal roofing and the top surfaces of the purlins. I looked back through the thread and didn't see any mention of this. Is it felt paper? or something else? Is it there for condensation on the underside of the metal? or some other purpose.

I'm anxious to see the doors. And finished trim. When's the floor pouring party?

Allen,

Thanks for the advice on capturing memories. Actually, my wife has found an app for her Ipod Touch that keeps track of such things, including nursing patterns etc. It's pretty cool, and surprisingly yes, there is an app for that. She started out using a pad and paper, but purchased the app when we got home form the hospital.

As for your questions, I put the diagonal pieces on the day I set the trusses, and just left them. They gave the trusses quite a bit of rigidity when I first put them on, prior to the purlins, etc. and aren't really in the way of anything, and I can get a fair amount of wind, so I thought they wouldn't hurt anything by staying.

Keen eye, yes I do have felt paper under the metal roof for condensation purposes. It is standard 35# paper (I think I have the number correct) that you can get a Lowe's, etc. It was an inexpensive barrier.

I wanted to add some pictures tonight of the work I did over the weekend, but it has been storming tonight and I needed to take some additional pictures, so I will post them tomorrow.

The siding is complete, I finished it over the weekend, except for a small piece on the back of the building over the 7ft loft doors. I started staining the "second floor" this evening. I goofed a little on some of the angle cuts, so I added some scrap pieces above the siding to make sure I had something to attach the j channel to for the soffit. These will be hidden with the soffit.

I got one door built over the weekend, I took a picture of it last night while I was doing some staining. 7 more to go...

I will eventually put trim on it to make it look like more of a traditional door, but for now I wanted to just get them up to weather proof the building.

I used 2 inch wood screws on the door.

The back of the door is pretty basic, just some bracing and additional blocking for the hinges.

Sorry for the poor picture quality, my camera is slowly failing, and I need to get another one.

The 2x4 going across the door is hold the door shut for now, until I get the other door built. I still need to think of a way to secure them until I get the cement done, which will probably be in the spring.

What's the status, Seth? Any more work since the little bambina? And how is she doing, by the way? Should be close to pulling herself up at the couch, I would guess.

Thanks for thinking of this project.

Adelyn is doing well, and is quite mobile now.

I did get everything done but the trim, and I realize now that I neglected to post any pictures of the shed in its current state. My apologies. I am on a business/climbing trip currently, when I get back next week, I'll post some pictures.

If it ever stops raining in Ohio, I will add the trim. This weather is driving me crazy...so much to do!!
