I have a cub cadet 2166 which I have owned for 6 years without any problems. Recently the PTO original belt broke or more accurately seems to have melted. I replaced it and as soon as I started the machine the belt broke. I replace it yet again and used the machine for about an hour to mow the lawn and this time the belt shredded and broke after I was done and just rolling up my driveway. Anybody got any ideas of what is going on here?

Check the spindles on the mowing deck. A defective bearing or other problem could be creating friction. Also check the tensioner. Is it functioning properly and maintaining tension on the belt. Check underneath the deck for obstructions. Check all the pulleys, deck and mower for sharp edges.

Something must have occurred when that first belt broke. If the belt broke and damaged a pulley, either out of alignment or a wobble, its going to beat up your belts. Have someone sit on it with it on and the pto running. Check it out from the left side of the tractor and see if its running true.

One quick test is with everything off and PTO cluth disengaged and a new belt on, if you grab one of the blades under the deck everything should spin including the belt up to the PTO. There will be some resistance, but if there is too much to spin it at all by hand, something is frozen up or seriously binding. Check each moving part one by one to find the culprit.
