Hello, I've got a CC 2185 with about 200 hrs on the meter. At the end of last season it developed a transmission fluid leak. I can't tell exactly where it's coming from, but it seem to be above the oil filter. I already tried changing the oil filter (thinking it might be coming from a faulty filter gasket) and made sure the oil drain plug was snug. Any ideas where this leak could be coming from??

Have you checked the pickup tube connections to see if they are snug and not leaking? Not sure what else it could be as that is a sealed unit.

Pickup tube? I'm not familar with that part.

Can you tell me a little more about it and where it's located? Would it be loose or stopped up or something?

Thanks a million for you help!

For lack of better explination...

If you are sitting on the tractor seat it will be under you right butt cheek. It is a tube that runs from the bottom of the trans to the top. Has two fittings that go into the trans. and then fittings on the line that go into those fittings. I would expect that is where the leak is.

This may sound complicated but it is just a return line for the fluid and one of the fittings if probably leaking.

I don't know if this really helps, but my 2185 transmission has been leaking around the right side axle shaft for the last few years. My dealer at the time (he's since gone out of business) advised me to just keep it topped off with fluid because of the cost to replace the seal. I've done this and it's only actually used around 1/2 quart per year. The mess it creates, as with all oil leaks, makes it look like much more.

Thanks guys. I'll give those areas you mentioned a good inspection.

This leak is dropping quite a bit of fluid, and it seems to be coming from somewhere around the transmission filter - but not the filter itself.

One weird thing is that it seems like it used to just leak after I used the mower. I would clean up the oil, and then I wouldn't see anymore until after I used it. That symptom goes along with the pickup tube theory. Now however, the fluid seems to be leaking all the time...

Like I said, I'll find the tube that was mentioned and give it a look. Hopefully it's something simple like that and not the transaxle. That would be a royal pain.

thanks!

I haven't looked at the construction of the newer tractors but a common leak point on the old ones was the gasket seal between the hydrostatic transmission and differential. I had a persistent leak on my old 1450 near the filter and even replaced the tube to no avail. I ended up pulling the transmission, replacing the $1 seal and using plenty of RTV sealant. The fix was cheap but a lot of work.
