2186 won't start

2186 won\'t start

My 2186 with 33 hrs on it just stopped while mowing yesterday. Turned the key and got nothing. I found out about the wiring issues here and sure enough, the headlight wiring had melted and shorted on the exhaust. Took care of that and replaced the fuse this morning. Now I get current (headlights come on), but still no action on the starter. I'm guessing that one of the cut-off switches got messed up, but I'm not sure how to test them or where to start. It's still under warranty so I'll call the dealer tomorrow--hopefully he'll pick it w/o charge or I'll have to wait until next weekend to get it over to him. In the meantime, the grass grows....

I guess the moral is to keep up with TBN BEFORE you have a problem!

There are multiple fuses. Check them all. If it looks good, measure it with an ohmmeter or swap it with a known good one. Usually only one fuse blows in a string, but if the current surge was large enough it may have blown others.

Yeh, I replaced both fuses even though 1 still tested good. Unless there's hidden ones not shown in the manual...

You say it stopped while mowing and will not start now..Did you turn off or disengage the mower?

Well I went to look at things again and while wiggling the PTO switch a wire popped out! Now that's a coincidence! The blade in the switch came right out with female connector. So I pushed it back in and it started right up. I've temporarily taped it in and finished my mowing for the weekend. Will pull the switch out and see if it's fixable or not.
