2210\\4010\\4110

I just bought 3 acres, 1 woods, 2 grass, and will build a house in the spring. I will do all the landscaping, and will make 1700 feet of mtb trails. I will need to clear about 200 feet of aspahlt driveway when when the snow is to much for my walk - behind blower. I will also need to do a bunch of roto -tilling to put the lawn in. After the first year, 90 % of the time will be mowing, and I do not want a tractor that is heavy enough to mark\mess up the lawn.
Can a 2210 or 4010 with a JD 53 inch loader,60 inch box blade and 60 MMM do the job? The 4110 is getting out of my price range, and with R3 tires the MMM barely mows past the tires - would had huge amounts of time and aggravation trimming around everything. Thanks, Ken

Re: 2210\\4010\\4110

I think either tractor will do the work. Get AG tires if you get the 2210, looks like you'll be needing traction! The 2210 with 62 mower is great for mowing. I've been pretty happy with mine, the FEL has good lift capacity (well matched to the tractor) and the whole machine is easy to operate.

One complaint on the 4XXX is the lack of a factory mowing depth control - which the 2210 has - but the 2210 lacks a 3pt depth control - which the 4XXX has - so there are some tradeoffs either way.

WIth 200 feet of driveway I suggest you ditch the walkbehind and invest in a backblade, rear or front snowblower - you'll be a lot happier!!!!!!!

Ken,

You might also give the MF GC2300 a look. Little less expensive than the 2210, but on paper, a little better performer. I've had mine about four months, used mostly for mowing, a little bit of drainage work, and a little bit of snow removal. So far I'm very pleased. 3PH/position contol is as 2210, which might be a bit frustrating for you. Also, location of lever I find awkward, but doable. If you're doing a lot of ground engaing work, it might be more of an issue. Good luck with your search!

Re: 2210\\4010\\4110

I think personally you would be better off with the turfs. I use mine strictly in the woods and I never find when moveing wood, tilling, moveing stumpt etc That the pseudo ag tires that come on a 2210 would help. They certaily are not whaty you want to mow. Unlike the larger tractors both tires are 4 ply so their is no sidewall strength gain with the ags on the 2210. The reall issue in traction with the 2210 is weight, or lack of it. I dont know what type of trails you want to build or what you mean by landscapeing. If you just need to move dirt and plant trees then I would go with the 2210. If you need to dig, remove stumps etc I would either pay a dozer and get the better mowing tractor or go with a 4110. The 4010 is so similar to the 2210 I would not trade off the mowing abilitys for the FEL gain. Both the 2210 and the 4010 are two piece garden tractor frames while the 4110 is a one piece tractor frame. I think this is as significant as the improved FEL specs. Also the 2210 does not have a set Rock shaft adjustment, which is a LOT more difficult to work with a rear blade etc. If your budget limits you to the 2210 Vs the 4010 the 2210 is the clear winner to me for any one who primarily needs it too mow long term.

Re: 2210\\4010\\4110

Hi, Fred G.

A quick question. I thought the rockshaft/3-PH position control on the 41010/4110/4115 served as the mower height setting. Maybe that is just an uneducated assumption I have.

Any 4010/4110/4115 owners want to comment on how the mower height is set and controlled on these tractors? I do know you need the latch kit to lock the deck in the up position.

Re: 2210\\4010\\4110

You are correct. On my 4110 the mower deck height is controlled with the rockshaft control lever. The MMM hangs off draft arms that are supported by lift arm brackets which fit over the 3pt hitch draft links. So raising the 3pt hitch raises the deck. The whole arrangement is a bit crude and fussy about adjustments but it works.

The turf tires on the 4110 are relatively small and don't provide for much ground clearance of the deck when it is fully raised. This caused a some difficulties using the tractor for other tasks when the deck is installed. Good news is that it is fairly easy to remove the deck.

Despite a number of mechanical, hydraulic and design problems I like the 4110 because it is small enough to make a good yard mower but still has full 3pt hitch capabilities.

Re: 2210\\4010\\4110

I have a 4110 with R4 and 60mmm. I control the mowing height with the 3PH arm that has position control. The first time I ever mowed with it I just measured the height of my old lawn tractor deck, then lowered the 4110's deck to that height and set the little locking bracket next to the lever to that postion. Then I can return to the same position every time I mow. Simple. It does a great job mowing, and for it's size I was surprised to find that it was more nimble than the Craftsman that I had.

I do not beleive the 2210 or the 4010 have position control for the 3PH lever. I'm not sure if this would make things more difficult or not.

Also, my R4's do not mark the lawn in any way, even when I mowed "vergin" sod that was freshly planted. That said, I also think the turf tires would provide enough traction for your uses.

In the last four years I have converted woods into lawn on two of my acres. It's a lot of work. I would recommend a landscape rake with gauge wheels, I'm sure a purchase you would not regret.

One more comment, I love my 4110 and wouldn't trade it, but I really do not beleive that I have done anything with it that the 2210 would not be able to accomplish.

Good Luck with your decision.

Re: 2210\\4010\\4110

I dont personally mow so I cant comment about that but the lack a a 3pth position control on the 2210 makes it a real pain to use other implements like a rear blade on uneven ground. I keeps catching so you are constantly lifting or lowering the adjustment. The 2210 has a seperate mower deck adjustment though. Its sort of a catch 22 I guess. Most want lighter weight to mow but more weight for the tractor stuff /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: 2210\\4010\\4110

Thanks, JClark and Dieter. That is what I was looking for.

Just so I am clear, it sounds like you find the cutting height you want by adjusing the 3-Point/Rockshaft control lever and measuring the cut height at the deck. Then you set the position control/ depth stop setting, note the number of the setting, and you can always return your position control/depth stop to that setting and expect the same cutting height. For example, if you want to cut at 3 inches that might equal a position control setting of 4.5 on the rockshaft control lever. Once you know what each depth stop adjustment equals in cutting heights, all you have to do is re-set the depth stop by that increment and cut at the desired height. Sound about right?

That isn't really much different than the way the floorboard dial system works on the 2210. The stop adjustment is just on the hydraulic control instead of separate on the floorboard. The numbers on my 2210's dial have never directly corresponded to the actual height
anyway. I think a setting of 3.5 gives me a cutting height around 3".

It's interesting that when JD writes of the specs for the grooming mowers for the 4010, 4110, and 4115, they state that the cuting height is "...adjustable from 1-4" in 1/8" increments from the tractor seat." I guess that is true once you determine what each numerical increment equals on the rockshaft stop setting.

Here's a link to a document containing that quote about the cutting height adjustment for mower for the 4X1Xs: JD Purchase Guide

Re: 2210\\4010\\4110

You got it. If you're fussy about the cut you should check the deck for level fairly frequently, both laterally and front to back. As the lift parts wear in the tilt can change a bit, meaning a half inch or more. Also I would not count on the dealer setting it up all that well, or maybe I should say I would not count on MY dealer setting it up all that well.
