Good tip about the rotation Bigpete. I had forgotten that I used your technique to get the hose back on the elbow of the suction screen cover. When I first removed the suction cover it took a little prying with a screw driver to get it to come off. Almost seemed as if the tranmission was painted after the suction screen cover was installed and the paint was holding it in place. Could have just been tight, not sure.

It was interesting to see the tiny pieces of metal stuck to the magnets in the suction filter.

Wonder if the fellow in Alaska with the cleaner oil at 50 hours did much running of his tractor in 90 degree temperatures. I did a lot of mowing this past summer when it was plenty hot outside.

Can the external air temperature make a difference in the amount of soot that accumulates in the oil? Might be a topic for the oils and lubricants section but it seems relevant to this thread in terms of some 2210 owners finding their oil to be cleaner than others.

Are you guys that are haveing oil this black after only 50 hour running any Diesel fuel additives ? I do and I wonder if that contributes to the lack of soot build up as well. It certainly is normal for the oil to get black in a diesel I sure just would not expect that on a little machine like theese with only 50 hours. Dave

To answer the question about fuel in my 2210, I am using diesel fuel "as is" from the pump at the local gas station without adding anything. Mike

Try some Diesel fuel additive. 1 quart $4.oo will probably last you a year. Reduces noise increase lubricity and reduces soot. all good things. The cetane boost really makes a VERY noticeable noise reduction. Dave

I started using fuel additive a year ago in my 4110, primarily for anti-gel properties, and I've been using it continuously since then. Agreed Dave, it does reduce noise, and it makes me feel better about the fuel I'm putting in my machine. It did not prevent the oil from turning black. Shortly after completing the 50 hr., I noticed that the new oil was black. As I understand it, this is completely normal in diesels, and I am not concerned about it.

I wouldnt be overly concerned either. I am just suprised that mine is so clean still and others are black so quick with such low hours. I run all the time at PTO speed. Its just interesting what the variable might be that makes the change. Dave

I didn't run any additives for the first 30-40 hours. For my last full tank I started using Stanadyne all-season and was amazed at how the engine got quieter during 2-3 hours of bushhogging. At first I thought it was my imagination but the engine was noticeably quieter at the end.

The reduced noise level alone is enough reason to use a DFA. Big difference. Dave

Out of curiousity, how many of you 2210 owners are using the John Deere branded DFA versus another brand?

I'm sure going to get some DFA and try it based on the remarks I have seen posted in this discussion thread.

If I were just useing it in the tractor I would use power Service. Its readilly available, cheap and does a fair job. I use DFA in my truck as well so I am now useing FPPF and 8 cetane boost. Dave
