2210 Clunk, clunk, clunk

Same thing with mine when the dealer swapped the 54" deck off of my X to the 2210. They used the same T pin and the R4s would whack, whack, whack in a tight turn. I finally got around to take in the front hanger and they swapped out the pin.

Did the dealer actually remove the front axle before investigating the noise. oh my! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The dealer should have (or develop)a checklist sheet whenever a tractor is prepped. These things should not be missed. Is swapping out the pin described in the installation notes for the 2210/deck?

I think the dealer drove it around, heard the clearance issue noise and attempted to fix that. I didn't know there was an L shaped pin, I will certainly have them replace that when I see them this afternoon.

This is good info, but of course I still don't know what the original noise was, wish me luck!

L shaped pin will be put on in the next few days. They finally were able to reproduce the problem I was having. When the got it to clunk, clunk, clunk, you can see sparks flying out the side of the frame at the location of the flywheel. When you put a flashlight in there you can see a shiny scrape mark on the flywheel, so they are tearing it apart and will call tomorrow with the prognosis.

The 2210 will be dropped off tomorrow. I will check with them when they drop it off to find out the exact cause of the problem.

While the x475 I have been using is a nice machine, I can't wait to get my 2210 back. It would have save me a bunch of time as I had to backfill behind a new retaining wall by hand this weekend. Fourtunately it only got to 106 degrees with 90% humidity on saturday. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I am very curious for the answer to this one...

Well here is the answer:

On a number of 2210's there is a clearance issue between the flywheel and some mounting hardware attached to the housing that surrounds the flywheel. When the engine is loaded and the tractor is on a significant incline, the engine and flywheel shift in their rubber mount and the interference in realized by a banging by a lip on the edge of the flywheel against essentially the head of a bolt on the flywheel housing.

When the tech put this info into the JD database, he got a hit instantly on the problem. So it has been documented by JD, they are aware of it.

Solution: Shim under the rear engine mounts, simple as that!

So two weeks later I have my unit back, all is well, and I finally got my LX4! And I even got new front axle drive bearings out of the deal because the tech said there was some noise up there. That's not what I brought it in for, but oh well, I'll take it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Glad it all worked out. Thanks for the head's up on this potential problem.

Well that is interesting, I'm glad you are happy! And this answer does make sense!
/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gifMy only concern would be if the teeth on the flywheel were damaged at all? It may not be noticable now when everything is so new but may be as she is started over the years a few hundred times.

Fortunately the flywheel has the teeth on the leading edge and is a smooth face that extends past the teeth on the trailing edge. It was this smooth face that was dragging, looks like it was smacking against a drilled notch in this smooth face. So no damage to the flywheel teeth was done.

I had it out this afternoon, and could not reproduce the problem, so it seems to be fixed. This afternoon was also the first chance I got to use my LX4 rotary cutter. Once it got about 1 hr of use on it, the driveline quieted down and it ran flawlessly. Knocked down about 1/3 acre of chest high weeds down by the cornfield and it never missed a beat. The deck stayed nice and clean (wish my 54c stayed that clean underneath!)
