Does anyone know for sure if the 2210's diesel engine ships with break-in oil or not? The manual for the 2210 makes no mention of it and if one searches jdparts.deere.com using the 'search for model numbers that use the part number' for the break-in oil, the 2210 is not listed.

I have read other posts about 4xxx series manuals stating break-in oil and a parts site search matches this.

I would like to change my engine oil prior to the listed 50 hour interval but want to make sure I use the proper oil.

I was told--with confidence--by JD that all Deere and Yanmar diesels ship with break-in oil. I did exactly what you plan to do, with both my 2210 and 4110, and had/have no problems. Please don't take my word for it, though. You can contact Deere directly. They will tell you that it is not necessary to change the oil until the intervals in the manual. They should also be able to verify the oil type as the tractor comes out of QC.

I was under the impression that my 2210 was shipped with break-in oil. I changed mine at eight months and roughly 45 hours of use. Switched to Rotella Synthetic. Now at 90 hours and running great with minimal to zero oil consumption. Going to change again before winter and/or before 100 hours.

Fred...only <100 hours! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif You are either working too much at the wrong things (not a "job," I hope), or you have too many tractors and spread your seat time too thin on the 2210.

Sheesh...I'm pushing 80 hours on my 4110 since March and I've already been through one 2210 before that /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hey, since you guys are talking oil, how long does it take for your 2210's to turn the oil black. I just did my second oil change at 100 hrs and boy was it black. Others on TBN talked about that being normal for diesels, but I work for one of the heavy truck OEMs and those diesels run for 1000’s of miles with the oil still looking like new.

The JD break in oil was black at 50 hrs, the Mobile 1 10W30 synthetic was black at the next 50 hours and it didn’t take that long to turn. I’m using the new Mobile 1 5W30 Truck and SUV as it is formulated for diesels meeting the CI-4/CH-4/CG-4/CF-4-CF industry standards and Ford/GM/Dodge/Cummins/Powerstroke/Duramax and Navistar diesel engine requirements. I have about 4 hours on this oil change and it is starting to color already.

I’m concerned that I may have excessive blow by, but everything seems to run well.

Any thoughts? How long does it take for your oils to discolor?

John

Pete,

The biggest thing keeping my hours down is my 11-year-old son and the 335 he "inherited" from me, he does 1/2 the mowing and 90% of the snowblowing with his "lil JD" so the 2210 does not get as much of a workout. As soon as his legs grow a little more I have a feeling that most of the hours will shift to the 2210 and that I may find my seat time decreasing even more.....

Sons are great for that, and a few other menial labor tasks around the homestead. This is a tradition in my family, passed down from my father to me, and now from me to my son. I don't recall my side compensation being as high as my son's is though. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

You know, once your son can reach the foot controls on that 2210, you'll need a bigger tractor with an inseam requirement that is just out of his range. Or maybe you can just have him do all the work and get yourself one of these.

My dealer told me that they (their dealership) have been putting break-in oil in again at the first scheduled change. Their reasoning is that the engines are not being worked hard enough to properly seat the rings. Changing to the full viscosity, or even much worse a sythetic, before proper ring seating, will allow more blowby and less power for the life of the engine. He told me that all the CUTs are being done this way. I will not use synthetic until my upcoming third oil change. BTW, its the diesel combustion blowby that makes the oil black, and so soon after change. Diesels have much more blowby than gas engines anyway, due to the huge difference in compression ratio. My 2 cents worth for ya... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Pete,

I like the boat idea. But another, bigger JD wouldn't be bad either! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hey Fred how's your summer going with that new truck and fifth wheeler ? I just changed my oil at 100 hours as well. Because the 2210 only holds 2 quarts I will continue to change it every 50 hours. The small volume of oil the 2210 holds is one of the reasons I think it gets black quicker. I'm using Mobil Delvac 1 which is the same oil I run in my Duramax. I just received a great oil analysis back with 10k on the oil and I'll be extending my drain interval to 15k this time. Even so after a few hours on the same oil with the 2210 it's black. I have 5k on the oil in my truck now and it's still clear. Same oil. The other thing I did at the 100 hour mark was change the hydro filter. No need to drain all that fluid you replaced at 50 hours, just change the spin on. It had a lot of metal particles. Don't forget to change those fuel filters as well. The Fuel Filter on the 2210 is very small. Hope it's all working well for you Fred. PS I sure wish after 12k on those Ranch shocks that I would have gone with Bilsteins ! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
