2210 Hydrostatic creep, my imagination, or something else?

<font color="green">When my John Deere 2210 was new (hit 49 hours yesterday) it seemed that when driving forward it came to a quick stop whenever I took my foot off the forward travel pedal. Now it seems that the tractor continues rolling forward a little bit.

In addition while sitting on nearly level ground with neither the forward or reverse travel pedals depressed, the tractor is creeping backwards ever so slowly.

Either my mind is playing tricks on me or the tractor is not behaving the way I recall it used to behave. It was doing this both when cold just after starting and warm after mowing for a while.

What can other 2210 owners tell me about their experience in this regard?</font>

My 2210 doesn't creep, but now that you mention it, it does seem like it doesn't slow down as quickly when I release the forward pedal. I am 40+ hours and just noticed this within the last 5 hrs or so. No rain here in Aug/Sept so my mowing pretty much stopped. The seat time dried up along with the yard! So I haven't been using it much but have noticed the condition you described the last 2-3 times I've had it out.

I have yet to find a hydrostatic that won't creep some. Put it on a steep enough hill and it creeps very slowly, it's inherent in the design but quite frankly is not an issue. When you park it on a hill always drop your implements and engage the parking brake. The creep is very slow. The larger JD's have a button that controls the speed with which the machine comes to a stop as I thought I read in the brochure, could this also be your case?

I have not noticed mine creeping. But, I have noticed it not stopping as fast as it used to.
I now have 83 hours. No leaks yet either.

I also notice mine not stopping as quickly as when new but no biggie. I do not notice any creep yet at 50 hours. Dave

All you need to do is adjust the "neutral" position on the HST unit. Refer to your manual for the specifics. All it entails is adjusting where the swash plate control arm is when the pedal is in the neutral position. Creep is not inherent by design, it's just out of adjustment...

The creep I'm refering to is with the tractor not running and on a hill. Fluid will escape through the valving as the weight of the tractor pulls the tractor down a incline. A condition where the forward/reverse is actually slightly engaged while at rest or in the neutral position is not desireable. My tractor will creep ever so slightly when placed on a fairly steep incline but the slow down response has never changed and responds very quickly. If the JD's hydrostatic transmission has no creep then it's a change from the previous models.

I see what you are reffering to now. What you are describing is internal circuit loss causing the tractor to roll. Yes this is inherent to all hydrostatic drive units. That's what the charge pump does when the unit is running, it supplies addtional fluid to compensate for the loss made by the tolerances designed into the pump and motor.

I have driven just about every brand of tractor with a Hydro and it is at verries with brand and model but even new tractors will creep moreso if the linkage is stiff (try lubing it)

I've had several hydrostatic drive tractors and when properly adjusted wil not creep when running.

The procedures will surely be in the service manual, it's usually quite simple to adjust. I would think your dealer would be able to copy those pages out of the manual for you. But if you plan on doing any service on your tractor buy a manual. I know they are kind of a expensive but a must have if you want to fix stuff yourself.

I will clarify. Every new /used brand of tractor I have driven will move on an incline (not the pedal failing to return to the neutral position) a Hydro is a fluid coupling if the idle is low on the tractor there is insufficient coupling which will allow a slight roll to occur. I would be interested in seeing one that does not. Steve...

Thanks STVMAN, it's what I was trying to say. Our definitions of creep were not clearly defined. I describe the failure of the hydro pedals to return to the neutral position as walking and creep something that happens when the pedals are in neutral whether the engine is running or not as you have explained. While my tractor creeps a little, it is small enough to where when mowing backwards down the steep banks of my pond, I have plenty of time to react and change direction. Conversely, my manual tractor requires intense braking while backing down. I already have it in forward and low gear with the clutch in just in case. This difficulty has prompted me to pretty much forgo the manual for that type of work. Rat...

Now I finally realize why you don't like manuals as much. That is a problem for me too. Before I start going up the incline on a hill I have to downshift to prevent rolling backwards at a fast rate of speed! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
