I was reading on the JD website and it says that with using the LX4 on a 2210 that one needs to have the 210 loaded with bucket on the tractor for ballast. I usually leave the bucket off mine while using the LX4 (easier to maneuver). What exactly is the purpose of the ballast? Should I get some weights to go on the front?

Sometimes climbing the bank on my tank my front wheels start slipping, would some weights help that situation?

Thanks,
Darin

The purpose of the loader attached to the front, or any weight for that matter, is to counteract the weight on the rear of the tractor to prevent it from tipping over. If you cut with the bucket on keep the loader low. Weights attached to the front would not obscure vision the way the bucket might.

I sometimes run a 48" bush hog behind my 2210. The first few times I did not have any front ballast (and no loader). I had a hard time steering - very light on the front end especially if the mower came up off the ground on a rise. I have since found 5 suitcase weights at a yard sale /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif - what a difference they made. I will not run a rear mount mower again without the front weights!

I use a JD 403 4ft rotary on my 2210. W/O front weights I can lift the front end off the ground and I'm not necessarily in the best shape! So the front end is pretty light. I put 5 quick tach weights on the front bar and that does the trick.

All comments about ballast are right on. In addition, I was trained in my earlier days on the farms to bush hog in high grass or brush with the loader bucket leveled 6" or so above the ground. That way your loader finds all the hidden "goodies" before the rotary cutter does. Also helps to locate stuff before it damages your underbelly.

Just another reason for using a loader while using your cutter.
