I recently bought a JD 2210. I have been reading about the problems with the pto's and transmission cases on the earlier models. I am trying to figure out what year model mine is. Can you determine this by the serial number? Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah...give the serial number to your dealer. That will indicate the year of manufacture which may not be the year it was first purchased.
Tractordata.com might list the serial number too, but I don't know how reliable that is...

In addition to the YOM, they can provide a description of any warranty work performed, and a service history if that was performed at any dealer. They can also tell you where it was purchased from.

my 2210 has a manufacture date on a tag on the frame near the front. - it's a 2004 with 580 hours, and I haven't even replaced the battery yet. No problems. I use a rear PTO tiller.

My grandpa's 2210 had 500 hours when something broke in the tranny when he ran over a root in his yard with the MMM. Didnt fix it, just traded it in for a new tractor and riding mower. I can say it sounded awful, especially when you gave it throttle. The serial number plate is on the right side of the tractor on the frame very close to the right front tire. I have heard that some 2305's have had a similar problem and the newer 2305's were given beefier transmission cases to deal with the problem. John Deere 2210 tranny noise - Tractor Videos - Kubota, John Deere, New Holland and More Look at the footage with the bolts in the cup holder, See how much vibration there is? That is a lot more that normal. It is hard to hear the bad sound, the camera didnt do to good of a job with that.

Tractordata usually has the serial numbers listed so you can figure out the year model, but for some reason it doesn't list them for the 2210. Still, here are some spec's for that tractor, if you don't have the manual for it....

Thanks for the info guys. I will look for the tag. If that doesn't tell me anything I will see what the dealer can come up with.

I just checked my serial number. The first 3 digits are 319. So that makes it an '04, correct? Wondering if they had the tranny and pto issues worked out on these? Have no complaints whatsoever, other than it could be a little bigger sometimes..........;)

I would next go to JDParts.com and look up your model, then the trans or PTO, and look for a serial number break in the replacement parts. See if you serial number is above or below the serial number break and that will tell you.

Well I have an 04 2210. It's in the shop now for the rear PTO. The repair bill is probably gonna push 8 grand. To a point the 2305's have the identical transaxle. Mine will be upgraded to the heavier case but the amount of extra material is not inspiring. Beware any kind of shock load and make darn sure your slip clutches and shear bolts on your implements are set up weak!

You paid over $10K for a repair? You must L-O-V-E that machine! :confused2:

Yeah, considering the tractor isn't worth 10K...
Well, the man did what he did...and the tractor would have only been worth parting out if he didn't fix it.

Maybe know the story before talking about me like i'm and idiot. I wouldn't have paid that but the insurance company figured it was in their best intrest. The parts were around 6 grand alone. I guess loader and mower would have to be replaced or modified to fit something new. As I recall the tractor, loader and mower were around 20K new and the tractor has fairly low hours. I'm pretty happy I had insurance that covered it or I'd a been in a spot. I still had to pay a substantial amount in deductible and depreciation but nothing close the actual repair cost. The ease with which the failure occured with the as supplied shear hardware in place was stunning. I'll be throwing the shear bolt in the lathe and weakening it substantially. Even though the new style case is reinforced it still isn't inspiring. JD doesn't seem to have a good record of stepping up to the plate for this obvious weakness. I have raised a stink about it but am not expecting much to come of it. The dealer handled the repair but could be far more supportive to me as a customer. I'm thinking an orange tractor is pretty attractive right now and if finances allowed I'd trade the green one in a heartbeat. JD has lost my loyalty.

Boy, that was good news! Was it your standard Homeowner's insurance, or did you have a rider?

I'd read your other post describing how this failure occurred, BTW.
