I would label each wire on both side of the connector than cut it out and replace it or just solder and heat shrink all the wires.

Hmmm. Been a few years since I split mine, so my recollection might be fuzzy. But doesn't the front half of that 12 pin connector go with engine if/when the tractor gets split?

I am sure you are right but I would deal with that when the time comes.
