Hi all,
I normally hang out over in the Hay forum on TbN. But I wanted to share a story and get some feedback. This all starts with a car hauler. This hauler is a mid wheel standard hauler. NOT over a top-over deck due to expense and practical use. To haul the hay baler we found out the axle length was ninety something inches!! We are not wide enough!
I said to the misses- don't worry. We'll just modify/extend the deck outwards 8" on each side from the wheelwells back. Should not be a big issue?...
Off I went for 1/4 Steel to make my decking. I woul use 8 gussets/braces per side holding up 8" wide flat plate for that new deck. Something like 6' long of new decking total to get from the back on-ramps to the wheel wells.
I tried a 14" cutoff wheel and after 2 hours realized that this was a much bigger job than I thought! I called in my brother the machine builder..... He sort of laughed at me and said I needed a large metal saw (horizons band-saw thing) or a PLASMA CUTTER.
Here is where the story gets fun! I haul out to Harbor Freight to get us the cutter! We get home, fire it up, and WOW, HOLY COW, I AM IN LOVE (big ol' grin).
This thing cut through that 1/4 hot rolled like butter! To test the cutter I even doubled up to 1/2" steel plate and it popped thru that too.
My brother started to built and weld the sections w gussets and plate tops in no time flat!
As I look into this further, I am finding a solid need for some flatbed car haulers to also offer a combo 101 decking surface with out going to a more $$ top over trailer type. I wonder if there are any out there?
So that is the story of a new 22' sure trac car hauler that wants to haul a hay baler.
Happy 4th to everyone!
