2305 engine ticking sound

My engine has been making a ticking noise when it is cold ever since the first oil change, at least that's when I remember first noticing it. When the engine warms up the noise goes away. For the first oil change I used John Deere 15W-40 which is what the dealer gave me when I asked for oil for my tractor but after hearing the ticking noise I checked the book and it doesn't call for 15W-40 or 15W-anything. After that I went out and bought Rotella T 5W-40 and have been running it for the past 10 months or so but I still get the ticking.

I'm about due for another oil change but I'm wondering if people think this noise is related to the oil or if it is something else that I should be going to the dealer for. The machine is less than 3 years old and has 93 hours on it. I should note that 5W-40 is not an oil called for in the manual either but being that it's synthetic I figured it would be fine. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds kind of normal to me...is this your first diesel engine?

well any diesel tractor is going to tick when its cold, my 2320 does on these cold mornings and so does my 455 deere. a few mins and its fine and ready to work.

I agree that this sounds normal. My old 455 had 1100 hours on it and it sounded like #@$% when it was cold but quieted up nicely when it reached temp. That engine never gave me a lick of trouble. My 2210 is much quieter than the 455 was but is still noticably louder cold than when it's warm. I'm at 211 hours on this one with no troubles. Like CAT MAN said, Just let it run a few minutes to get the engine and transaxle warmed up and put her to work.

IMO the rotella 5w-40 is fine, It's a quality diesel rated oil that falls within the upper and lower viscosity range called for (meaning your not putting 0W-20 oil in an engine designed for 20W-50 at your operating temps).
