I've been setting the RPM's where indicated on the tach. Seems to work fine, I don't need to slow down for "heavy" tall grass. I haven't kept track of fuel consumption, but I know I'm getting twice as many mowings per tank as I did with my (gas)LX255

You probably want to use the 2900 RPM indicated to get the full 2100 rpm on the front PTO. Cutting at a lower RPM will lower the cut quality since you'll reduce the tip speed of the blade.
You'll get great consumption no matter what engine speed you use so it's not worth trying to economize. I cut (Smooth terrain) full pedal on Hi in the hydro at about 9mph (Except for hills) and fuel consumption is great for the 5 acres a Mow.

Slightly different but almost the same, I have a 2210 w/62C, and I run'er wide open. Been doing this for 4 years, cuts great. Tach says 3000 or so, just slightly above the "PTO" line on the tach. Doesn't use much fuel no matter what, fuel consumption way lower than my 335GT w/20HP gas.
