I blew my trans fan thanks to a big stick. I have a new on in hand and can't figure out how to take the old one off. Has anyone done this? Is there somewhere I can buy a shop book?

If you search the old post someone figured out how you could cut the fan in two and install it - I think they glued it back together on the shaft.. Otherwise (IIRC) you have to take a lot of stuff apart to get to the fan..

While you are at it someone also made some shields for the fan..

Ya there is a post 35 pages back about a 2210 but not specific. Is there a shop manual for my tractor like there are for cars? After 3hrs it looks like I need to drive out my u joints to get the shaft to drop but im not sure. It is too late to night to keep screwing with it tomorrow is a new day and there is daylight. I tried to search forums but it dosent seem to be working.

Yep, there are full service manuals for your machine.

Try this link:

John Deere Technical Information Bookstore - Home Page

If that doesn't work, I think this is what you want:

Technical Manual
Title Part Number Language Quantity Price (USD)
2305 Compact Utility Tractor TM2289 English $80.00 Add to Cart

Technical Manual CD-ROM
Title Part Number Language Quantity Price (USD)
2305 Compact Utility Tractor TM2289CD English $40.00 Add to Cart

The technical manuals are a great resource to have. They are very thorough and each section has a "theory of operation" part that is fabulous.

Well before I got to beating on the UV joint I called the dealer to see how much it would cost good thing too. He told me that the UV joint and driveshaft are one and it was 500 bucks. So I guess I will take the whole thing apart and try to drop the shaft by the front bolts. I will let you know how it goes.

good luck with everything.. Its a shame JD designed something so unprotected, easily broken, and hard to replace..

All fixed about 6hr job but I have some new ideas if it happens again. Not sure I needed to take all the finders apart and floor but I did and it did make it easyer but I think I might be able to just get the front pin of the driveshaft out with a little help from someone. I do have some pics if anyone is interested. Just a few of it apart I forgot to take one I replace the fan LOL.

Have not had any issues with mine but it's good to know it can be fixed with in a day.

How did you remove the driveshaft? did you remove the roll pins, flange or something else?

Might be too little, too late, but I dug this up from a couple years ago:

Re: 2210 hydro cooling fan

jd:
I don't know how to link back to an old thread, so I pasted 2 posts from an old thread here (see below). This is how I got my fan repaired. I took these posts, and a diagram of the 2305 driveshaft which I downloaded, to my dealer. He used this approach, and had my fan replaced the next day. You don't have to disassemble anything except the rear universal joint in the driveshaft. Hope this helps.

Hello Everyone,

I am fairly new to the forum and proud owner of a 2305. This is kind of funny, this past week I was clearing brush with the loader and of course a stick got caught in the fan and destroyed four of the blades. I was pretty disappointed with what had happened and of course like some of us here who encountered the same problem was completely going insane on how to replace the fan. I thought about taking off the floor plate, fenders, ROPS etc. Started to do that, and that was way too labor intensive. Spoke to the mechanic at the dealer and he suggested droping the shaft at the front of the machine where it connected with the engine. Again, way too complicated.

I am lucky enough to happen to know a fella who is a diesal mechanic for an excavating contractor. He stopped by and here is how we did it, in less than 30 minutes, without cutting anything.

There is a bushing, or bar that holds the mid mount mower that needs to be removed. The transmission shaft is now easily accessible. The mechanic then took the drive shaft apart at the knuckle joint closest to the fan. It seem pretty involved (I am not a mechanic). He removed c-clamps, punched out two bushings and the shaft dropped down and he was able to access the fan bolts and he replced the fan.

I am going have this fellow make me a skid plate of some sort - he is an outstanding welder, definitely a good guy to know.

I am pretty surprised myself on how easy this fan got destroyed. I am going to definitely send a letter to JD.

Hi Guys
I just replaced mine using the method of taking the universial joint apart. It was not that hard to do if you remove the bracket for the deck height adjustment, Took me about a hour but I was in no big hurry.

here's a diagram of the 2305 driveshaft

I am here. :) You need to get to the front pin of the drive shaft. Take off the clip then drive it out. That should allow you to push the shaft back far enough. That is the hardest part in my oppinion and getting the clip back on is a little tuff too.

fan problems .I just serviced my 2305 50 hours I was having a hard time greasing the joints they were turned could not get grease to it so I pulled the shaft and greased it on the bench realy easy job so changing the fan would be easy also taking the shaft out and back in maybe a half hour.but the 2210 to take the shaft out is a b''''''ch done that to about 6 hours.the 2210 the tractors are not to easy to work on.
