John Deere 2305
Problem history:
2008 JD 2305 on original factory battery. Somehow, it lasted this far. Sometimes it's barely turned it over but once it's turned over at least twice; it's always started.

Today:
Started digging a hole around 10am. Ran the backhoe about 1800rpm about 2 hrs. Broke for lunch.
Came back after lunch, turned the key, got one rev out of the engine then a loud buzz & click/thunk - didn't start.
Lights on dash no longer come on when key turned. Machine behaves as though there's no battery at all - no lights, no buzz, no sound, nothing.

So I thought "it's the battery, it finally died."
Got a new battery, swapped it out, turned the key to "run", all lights on. Turned to "start" and again - loud buzz/click, then silence. Lights no longer come on when key turned to "run," complete silence when turned to "start."

Waited two hours, jumped the (new) battery. Turned key to run, bright dash lights came on. Turned to start, loud buzz/click followed by silence. Lights no longer come on when key turned to "run."

Any ideas? I'm guessing the battery died with an overvoltage and took something else out with it - but what?

PS - The thunk/click/buzz seems to be coming from the right side of the tractor.

2 bits it's a poor connection at one or more large battery cables.

yeah bad connection. shame you wasted money on a battery when you didn't need one. Most batteries that come with a john deere last a good 10 years. my last one lasted that long even without using a tender.

You're lucky if you have a quality battery. Many 2305 and other JD SCUT owners have had bad experiences. You can find any of these threads by googling the quoted text:
"The OEM JD batteries are especially known to die an early death"
"My went after two years - the engine shut off while mowing"
"after two and half years, the battery has gone bad"
"Replaced origional battery at 200hrs"
"132 hours and wont start"
"Got two years out of the battery in my 2520"
"A lot of Deere owners have gone to the Optima batteries"
"It quit after about 13 months"
"The battery that came in my 2305, lasted about 4 months"

The new one was lying around waiting to be put into a pickup. It doesn't really fit, but it has the correct terminals. It's just on the 2305 for testing now.

Thanks for the tips. I've already done both battery cable ends (a few months ago); I may just do end to end cable replacements tomorrow.

I have to say, the factory original 2305 battery produces more corrosion than any battery I've ever seen - it's worth replacing for that alone.

Same reason I replaced the one in my 790.

Out gassed like it was overcharging but meter said not.

Get one of those digital voltmeters they sell at HF for~$3. Measure voltage end to end on each cable with lights on. It should be very near ZERO. If not, continue and measure across each bolted or crimped junction in that cable. -- One of them will read high. Theres the problem.

Free beer to anyone (aka everyone who replied) who said "cable end."

I'd discounted the possibility since they were replaced in November, but the pos+ one was nothing but muck when I pulled it apart.

Original battery is back in and shows plenty of juice and I'll probably leave it - until it rots out these cables in another 6 months.

That is good news. I also have the original battery in my 2008 2305 with 400 hrs. Knock on wood.

ok so you took all that time to write all that internet mass hysteria. Next time take the time and test things before you throw money out the window changing parts that aren't bad. You could have easily diagnosed it wasn't the battery if you had tried to jump it. But you read on the internet that 2305 batteries are bad so you said " I guess its time for a new battery.
