Just an FYI, I have repaired my tie rod boots a couple times by cleaning the boot very good with brake cleaner and then using super glue to glue it back together. It works better than you would think and it only cost a couple bucks...... Eventually I will have to replace with new, but as long as you catch it early and keep the joint greased it should work just as well.

That's a great idea. I picked up one at the dealer this afternoon ~$24 (incl tax). They are about $17 (+ shipping) from Jack's, but I didn't want to go around with this torn for long enough for one to be shipped. However, knowing that this will likely happen again, I'm inclined to try the clean and clue routine. I've got nothing to lose, and if it doesn't work, then I can use the one I bought.

Even if I don't need the part this time, I like going to the dealer because they are always friendly and helpful. I also got connected with the Agco online parts site, which will be very handy.

Its great you have a good dealer close by. My dealer is an hour away, so I only order parts when absolutely necessary. I think you will be very pleased with the glued boot. Just make sure you get it cleaned very well. Good luck!

I have a good dealer, which is why I bought this tractor from them, but they are about an hour away. It just happened that I was going within a few miles of them today anyway, so I stopped by and picked up a boot.

So after you clean it good and glued it, how did you put more grease inside?

I grease the joint before gluing.
First thing I did was clean the outside of the boot and the tear really good with brake cleaner. Then carefully grease the joint through the tear (I had a pretty big tear!) Then I cleaned the glue surface again with a clean rag and brake cleaner. Waited until it was dry, applied glue to the torn surface and then held it together for a few seconds.
Its as easy as that. Saves time and money without any sacrifice.
Happy Repairing!

Since I had the new boot on hand, and since the tear would have been awkward to fix on the tractor, I put the new one on then did the brake cleaner/super glue repair so that now I have a spare.

This was a pretty easy repair as described earlier by others. I lifted the front end with a car jack (I had the FEL lifted out of the way to give me more room to work), and the whole job went smoothly.

The toughest part was getting the clamp back on, that little thing is awkward and slippery. There's probably a special pair of pliers for this simple task, but I clearly don't own a pair.

I'm clearly not an engineer, but wonder why these tractors have such a design when many others do not?

I agree. Poor design, but I don't think this tractor was designed specifically for Massey Ferguson. I think someone on the other side of the pond did the design for a "universal" tractor that "others" could utilize/market. That makes it a good all around tractor, but not necessarily a stand out.
I did notice last time I was at the Deere dealership that their tractors have all the steering components behind the front axle. Appeared to be much more protected and stout.
I have not compared it to the New Hollands.....

A neighbor friend has a bit bigger Kubota (2620?) that has a different design altogether and doesn't have such a dust boot.

Given the terrain where I live, having a spare makes good sense since this may be an occasional repair job. :(

Fortunately, it is a pretty easy DIY.

Several months ago someone referenced that these are simple tie rod boots available at any auto store for around $4. each. They sized them and said they were exactly the same and worked fine. Anyone recall this thread?

I am not familiar with this problem.

Assuming it is from brush, do we need a guard of some sort?
