Okay boys, here's what happened. I had went thru this same scenario about two years ago. It all boils down to me being old and forgetful. I simply thought by just looking at the deck that I KNEW the belt route pattern. Wrong, Wrong. I finally swallowed my pride and looked thru the computer file explorer till I found my Owners guide and sure enough back toward the end of the manual was how to replace the belt on a 38" deck. It took a couple of trips between the house and the shop before I finally was able comprehend what the picture was showing. When routed properly the belts fit (both the John Deere belt and the generic "A" belt fit). All is well with the old 240 again until I have replace the deck belt again, because just sure as **** I'll have forgotten how the deck belt is routed but maybe I'll get two more season with the New John Deere belt on there. Thanks for seeing me thru this belt replacement snafu. bjr

Sure should last more than a couple years. Check for bad bearings somewhere causing excessive wear.
