2410 bucket weak?

Scottwfixit,

My 24hp tractor came with a light materials bucket. I always thought it was pretty tough. This Summer I twisted it using bucket forks to loosen tree roots. I don't do that anymore. I am not talking about bending the cutting edge or top lip...I mean twisting the bucket. It came back to almost straight by using the forks, an I beam, and as much down pressure as the loader would generate. It worked, but is not recommended.

Without the forks, I don't think the bucket would have twisted, but there are probably other ways to put a twist in it without the help of forks.

so it dosent twist again?

Did you get it back to straight? How did you straighten it?

I would also like to find a way to reinforce the bucket to resist twisting.

For those who are not sure I mean by twist:

Sight across the leading (front) edges of your bucket sides. It they are not parallel, the bucket is twisted. Another clue- full rollback and full dump should occur for both cylinders at the same time. If one cylinder extends or retracts a bt more after the other is done, the bucket could be twisted.

In case my "sighting" description is confusing, here is a picture of what I mean. The sighting is across the front edge of the bucket sides. The bucket looks pretty good right now. The edges are close to parallel. As I move my head to bring the edges closer together, it is easy to tell that the bucket still has 1/4" or so of twist. It was much worse.

I bent my bucket pulling some fence post. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Added a piece of 1” pipe to lip. I have lifted a lot of heavy items since without bending it again. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif See attached picture.

From the looks of the cutting edge this bucket has seen some use. One way of easily stiffening it is to replace the original cutting edge with one that is 4 to 6 inches wide and 1/2 in. thick. This was done on my 7100 which had the edge worn off and made a very discernable difference in the rigidy of the bucket.

That is a good idea, and I would like to replace it with a bolt on cutting edge. The original is welded.

The middle of the cutting edge is slightly bowed up. That leaves the outside edges to pick up the wear when pushing snow on pavement. That is what the unusual wear is from. Every once in a while I bump the middle of the edge against a stump the straighten it out. Before long it's back to slightly up in the middle.

A 4" blade would be perfect for my little loader. Where did you shop? I have seem some online vendors, but have not looked seriously yet. There's still a little life left in the original.

Scott,

I also felt the bucket on my 2410 was a little wimpy for my liking, so I added a heavy wall pipe that just fits behind the top lip. Just like ronhall did, except mine runs the full width of the bucket. Then I welded my bucket hooks behind this pipe. I also added 5/16 by 3" wide plate to the leading edge of the sides of the bucket. I would gladly take a picture if I had a camera. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Now I don't think I could hurt this bucket if I wanted to. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I would also recommend a toothbar for serious digging and prying.

Ron,

I like that idea! It is now on my list of things to accomplish this year. Trouble is I can't take that welding class I wanted to this spring as we will be visiting Kubota Land this spring for about half the duration of the class /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif and /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif at the same time I guess...

Is there a reason you did not run that pipe the full width of the bucket like winchman did?

Just curious.

Mine was a 4 in. by1/2 in from the Kubota dealer. Its welded on which I think will help on stiffenning the bucket. This one should outlast me and the tractor compared to the original.

Cutting edges can be purchase from many different sources. The weld on are not specific to generic brand loaders and are sold by the inch.

Any stiffening you can give your bucket will payoff in longevity. You can get as crazy as you want, just remember the more weight you add to the FEL, the less you can lift. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ....RayBee

Did the dealer mount an other than original cutting edge on your bucket? Sounds like it is maybe heavier duty than what came on your bucket in the first place?
