2520..So I installed a Temp Gauge

I like what you did installing the gauge Pcabe5, but can anyone think of a way to mount a gauge without cutting a hole in the dash? I'm just going through a trade-in deal to get a new machine (see post on Unbelievable Trade-In Offer) and I fear my dealer would not have offered me this trade if I had customized the machine by cutting a hole. So I'd like to figure out a way to mount the gauge in a readily visible spot that does not require major mods to anything. Most of these gauges come with a mount of some sort that can be bolted somewhere. Just need to find the right spot.

You can buy gauge pods that have a mount with sticky tape or 2 small holes that can be mounted just about anywhere. The only damage will be 2 holes for small screws.

I see your concern and like kuboman said you can buy individual gauge pods that can be taped on or screwed on. When I traded my 2320 for the 2520 it had the same temp gauge and I left it with the tractor as I did not want to leave a hole with no gauge. My salesman really liked the temp gauge and I was hoping the new owner would like it as well. But I can see where this can be viewed either as a positive or a negative. Good luck on the trade.

PCABE,did ever see a digital gauge lit up?
If you did, what was your opinion?

I have seen the digitals lit up. The ones I saw were black numbers with a green back light. Very easy to read. No wondering about a needle. Now you'll probably test my memory and all I can remember is I think SPA was one of the brands. I was in Vegas and went to an auto show and that is where I saw them. Been a few years now.

My problem with mounting in a pod or bracket was weather related issues. I didn't want the gauge to fail from rain or when washing tractor.

My temps have been on average 165 degrees F water and 155 degrees F oil while mowing at 2500 rpm for two hours in 90 degrees F ambient temp. The highest block temp I have experienced is 176 water and 163 oil while mowing 7" thick fescue with ambient temp of 100 degrees. I noticed it cools down as I drive into the wind and heats back up when turning and mowing with a tailwind. 7-10 degree fluctuation. These temps are with the radiator screen clean. It's be so dry here in south Texas, I haven't had much grass to cut to clog up the screen.

Does anyone know what temp the factory JD idiot light is set to activate? My guess would be about 200-210 degrees.

Yes, all yanmar diesels use a thermostat.

On my old 2320 I traded I saw 165-170F degree temps when I was mowing so I was a little warmer than your 2320. Not sure if the new 2520 will see that cool of a temp under load or not. I am still on break-in oil so I might also be generating extra heat, not sure. These thermostats crack open at around 160 and is fully open at 185F.

The new 2520 sees 160-165F if all I am doing is loader work or transporting on the road.

The idiot light switch closes at 225-235 F.

I wanted the block temp rather than the cooler, thermostat housing temp.

Actually, your 2320 sensor is in the coolant block drain by the oil pressure switch and you would see cooler temps than where I put mine. I say that because the coolant returns from the radiator goes through the block first, then the head, and finally to the t-stat housing.

It's a spa technique DG 203. Will post pics of where I installed the thermocouples. This is a 2010 jd2320 yanmar diesel.

Jriffe108 - can you tell us where you found the tee for the oil pressure switch? I would like to add a pressure gauge and still retain the dummy light.

Thanks!

Thanks for this great thread. Just finished the mod but used a different model so it matched the stock cluster a little better. Yes I bought a triple gauge set just to use the temp sensor but I hope to add the oil pressure gauge during my next oil change.

This requires a 1 5/8" hole.

Parts needed from amazon:

Sunpro CP7574 Metric adapter $4.95

Sunpro CP8090 Mini Triple gauge set $29.46

This thread saved me some headaches today. Last summer I noticed antifreeze dripping from engine. Tracked the source to the bottle by the radiator. Engine overheated and spilled from spout on bottle. The grill was clogged. Remembered this thread and installed the temperature gauge on my 2520.

Mowing today and after 3 hours noticed temperature rise to 240. Antifreeze was still contained in bottle. Grill was clogged. Opened the hood and let gravity take over and just dropped it. Grill was clean once more after three tries. Resumed mowing and within 3 to 4 minutes temperature dropped to 160. After about another hour, notice temperature rising above 200 and stopped and unclogged the grill. By this time I was almost done and grill didn't clog up anymore. Temperature was back at 160 in no time.

PCABE5, Thank You for this very helpful thread. It is Greatly Appreciated.

I installed a mechanical black faced temp gauge and it works and looks great. Runs around 160F mowing.
I installed it without ripping the steering wheel off, because my steering wheel was VERY STUBBORN. I loosened up dash n drilled it from the front and it worked perfect. Easy to fish wires thru. Took about 2 hours being very careful n such. MAKE sure you have that M16 adaptor.
