I don't have any trouble taking off the lower assembly. I actually have to hold the bottom as i remove the bolts so it doesn't fall on the ground. That is also the last thing I remove and the first i put on. I don't remove the bronze plate on the left side, just the hydraulic cylinder. I wonder if your lower bracket was bent by something.
