I have a 2538 with about 130 hrs on it and the tach will only go to ~2000 RPM. When I move the throttle it appears to be revving up normally and other than the tach appears to be operating normal. Thanks for any advice.

When you throttle up, do you mean ABOVE 2000 RPM's, or from idle? I've noticed that my 2538 is tough to get above 2250. Seems like I use a lot more throttle to get it to 2250 from 2000. Never went above that, but I think it's tough to get above that level.

Does your tach seems to "peg-out" at 2000 RPM, like it's frozen, or does it fluctuate somewhat? My first thought is you might have some dirt inside that is causing some "resistance" to the needle moving above the 2000 mark on the tach. You might want to take an air hose (or vacuum) and clean it from the backside of the dash. Only 3-4 Phillips screws to remove the top half of the dash. (be sure to take the vinyl handle off of the throttle before dash removal). If that doesn't work, try tapping lightly on the tach housing to see if you can shake any particles loose and then try the air/vacuum again.

The fact that it appears to work normally rules out (to me, for now) any electrical problem. There are lots of guys more qualified on this board than me, but this is where I'd start.

Good luck.

Yes the tach seems to peg out at 2000 RPM. I used to be able to get it up to 2250 easily and it was about 3/4 throttle maybe slightly higher. I agree it looks like a tach issue and not an underlying engine/electronic issue. I will attempt what you recommended. Thanks for your help.

I had a similar issue with my 2555. I put some WD on the left side of engine where the throttle cable is located, also put some wd on base of the lever on the dash. did this 1 1/2 years ago and its been working fine.
