I need some suggestions. I'm having an issue with my 2555. It won't start but the behavior is pretty weird. When you turn the key to on, I can hear relays under the hood clicking on/off rhythmically. One is the inlet air heater. The other I can't find. It is at the side of the engine somewhere (left if you are in the seat). The gauges will also freak out when I go to crank the engine. I've had it catch but not turn over. I can hear the big solenoid that engages the starter. After that if I return the key to the off position the gauges will return to zero but jump around for about 10 seconds or so before going still. I think its some sort of short. It isn't a new problem but I haven't had any luck finding a solution. It seems to occur after a heavy rain with wind. The tractor mostly sits outside. I think water is being blown into something.

I've opened as many connectors as I can find that I can get open and checked for water. There were a couple with water on a rubber gasket but nothing on the contacts. I've put dialectic grease in all of them. In the past if I give it a day or two, I was able to get it started. Usually I'd have to recharge the battery. I have another post here from some time ago which is related. I assumed it was user error and replaced the battery. I also replaced the battery terminals and coated them with a corrosion preventor. We've had a week of rain here and there hasn't been much dry time. I have the hood up and the side panels off today hoping that will do it.

I took the ignition switch out and examined it. It passed a continuity test but I guess that isn't saying much. It doesn't look like you can open it without breaking it. I've looked at fuses and they seem fine including the big ones up front. Someone had mentioned in a post here for a 2555 cab (mine isn't a cab) the firewall connectors. They are hard to get at but I did manage to get them off. They seemed dry. Due to their location I couldn't get a good look. I've looked at the wiring but it is all wrapped in plastic conduit so I can't really see much. No apparent damage anywhere.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

John

did you replace entire battery cable assembly or just the ends? Only asking because i had a cable in the past that rotted internally and i could not see any issue from the outside. the cable didnt allow proper amperage in to start. the start solonoid only clicked

It will help if folks believe you are invested in getting to the bottom of it once and for all. Why didn't you link other threads mentioned in your long post? Why did you give up on your original post? Why don't you state the age of the tractor(I suspect it's less than 3 years old but some might have to do needless research just to find out)? Do you intend to see it through this time or wander away again once you get your tractor started? If you link earlier discussions that show the back story,we won't waste time starting at square 1 going over things that were already covered. Help us to help you.

I thought this sounded a bit harsh but then I read his old post. Someone actually asked if it was “fixed” but their was no response......so now I am thinking it’s just “direct” but not “harsh”. Haha

I agree it’s a “help us help you” mentally on TBN. I will take it a step further because so many of the threads show up in Google, DuckDuckGo and other searches. If their isn’t resolution or follow up no one really benefits.

Hope it gets work out for the OP. Here is the original-

I had a Honda that was doing similar things with the gauges etc. I figured it would be an endless saga for the specialist electrical mechanic. Minimum shop charge later.....a bad ground. He said he always starts their if he can’t explain some anomaly.

Never mind. I'll figure it out on my own.

Classic I.G.M.er. The TBN “community” solely exists to serve his needs......

I realized my post might be somewhat of a lecture that might not be appreciated and it wasn't. There was a recent discussion on whether one should post their location when asking for help. I can see why some might feel uncomfortable telling where they live but neglecting technical details, past actions taken and not reporting outcome of suggested remedies is indefensible. Seldom does a week pass that OP's exact problem isn't solved and it always require's the back story and relivant facts about tractor.
