mahindra kubota ford
Newbe here, but have lurked for a while off and on.

I have a 2555 HST with cab that I purchased used late last winter, at 545 hours. I do snow removal at a retirement community. This is a "back up" machine that saw only 20 or so hours during the spring and summer at my place and a friends. Last fall I moved it from my place to the site and it saw limited use, 15 to 20 hours or so, as my Kubota was not on site early in November. In late January we had an issue with the Kubota, so the 2555 was used. Temps were in the teens and it ran a bit rough, with a bit of run on.................parked it . Talked to a couple dealers and also spent quite a bit of time on this site. (EGR system issues )Thinking that the temps had something to do with the rough running etc, I left it parked till the temps got near 35 or 40. Went over to the lot where it was parked and it started right up and ran fine. Talked to the dealers again and both urged me to get it in to be "flashed" for the cold temps here in Michigan, (between Jackson and Ann Arbor) did get to 18 below one morning on site.

Waiting on parts for the Kubota, we had to use the 2555 for snow again. I used the machine overnight and it started running rough again, temps were in the mid to high 20's, I took the machine back to the polebarn and parked it, running, and was looking it over and it "ran away"..............I reached in and turned the key off which did nothing to stop the engine as it had started to suck oil thru the turbo, air to air cooler etc.

Lots of smoke and oil blowing out of the exhaust, finally quit after 12 to 15 seconds. So I am thinking that it sucked the oil out of the pan and how low is the oil now ???:confused2:

Was way up the stick:confused:

Drained the oil, measured what came out and what it took to re-fill, it was a gallon overfull. After lots of phone calls and talking to a couple diesel buddies my one mechanic friend talked to a Mahindra dealer in mid-Michigan, that said they have seen it twice in the past and that there is a seal in the hydraulic pump that dries out and feeds oil right into the motor.

Lots of hunting and pecking to get to this...............dealer told my friend that after draining the oil and getting the right amount in there, the 2 they have seen do this started fine, ours did not. With these guys help everything checks out to the injectors. Pushed it inside today and will hopefully get an injector or 2 out to look at and get tested. Have any of you guys here seen this?

Looking down the road..............How does one go about cleaning the catalyst chamber and the air to air cooler on the inside ??

What’s the factory warranty status of the tractor? It has a fair bit of time on the emissions warranty.

I’m having a hard time believing the EGR is the issue. I’m also having a hard time believing the injectors only leak when very cold- that should be the opposite!
My hunch is the fuel is gelling just enough to cause these issues- rough running since it’s gummy and just gummy enough that the fuel shut off isn’t happening when you turn the key off.
I’d unplug the EGR when it’s cold and rough running to see if it smooths out- unplugged should shut the EGR.
I’d also pull some fuel and put it in a mason jar or similar and see what it looks like at the low temps.
As for the hydraulic leak into the bottom end....could be related or totally unrelated- I’ll SWAG for the latter.

I do know that flashing the computer has helped folks but I’ve never seen this happen.

Not sure, as I am the second owner...............will look into that one.

our theory .......................oil was sucked into air to air cooler/ turbo and it ran on that hot oil (run away)
There is slight oil residue in emissions pipes and tubes and a very small amount in the bottom of the air to air cooler.

Could the injectors be plugged up from running on the oil, in reality the fuel also cools the injectors as fuel is sprayed into cylinder, maybe they are "cooked" shut ???

What we found today............. catalyst plugged with partially burned oil, injector tips burned off to various degrees.

So does anyone have a clue as to how the catalyst gets cleaned up again ??? High temp industrial oven maybe ??

Again I will suggest you pursue your warranty, let Mahindra clean this mess up. You also need to investigate the turbocharger as the probable cause of the engine oil that the tractor was running away on. Do not be concerned with cleaning things up, let the manufacturer supply new parts.

Being overfull in the engine oil reservoir is definitely a problem but can't say for certain if it's your only problem. Just like in other diesels the oil level can rise from excess idling since the fuel may not be fully burning and it can end up below the piston rings where it drains back into the oil.

A few questions:
1. Do you know when it was originally sold? The warranty starts on the date of first sale, not necessarily on the date it was built or shipped to the original selling dealer. Was it a 5 year warranty machine?
2. Do you know for certain when the last engine oil change was done, at what hours?
3. Does the oil seem excessively runny like it has been diluted with fuel?

As others have stated, first step is figuring out number 1 because if it is within warranty Mahindra is pretty good about taking care of warranty claims and fixing things. If they can't figure out why it did it and if there's damage to the engine they may replace the whole engine. It is well worth your time to check into it.

There is no question that the tractor is within the EPA emissions warranty period. This covers a surprising amount of engine components and parts. Basic warranty can be determined by providing any competent Mahindra dealer with your serial number.

Did you buy your tractor from a Mahindra dealer? you should be covered for emission system warranty. there is a field mod for a ECU reflash that may have prevented your problem.
