2615 4WD won\'t start

Just went out and cranked the tractor to let it warm up while I took the kutter off. I intended to put the boxblade on and clean up some around where I burned a brush pile earlier this week. It cranked fine like it normally does, but after running about 2 minutes, it started coughing white smoke and died. Now it won't start. Just puffs white smoke when the starter turns the engine.

It has about 1/2 tank of fuel, the oil shows right at the full mark, and the radiator is full of pretty green fluid. It only has 43 hours on it. I pulled the air filter, and it looks OK. It was pretty dusty, but not so much that I'd think it's starving for air.

What's this sound like, guys? I did put about 2 gallons of fuel in it since the last time I ran it. This was fuel that was left in a 5 gallon can since the last time I filled up, and I suppose it could have gotten some moisture in it, but I don't think so. The fuel filter at the back where the line comes out of the tank looks pretty dark, but I couldn't tell much about it.

Should I drain the fuel that's in it, add fresh fuel and try it again. Or, just wait until tomorrow and call the dealer? Like I said, it has 43 hours on it and I was planning to have the dealer come get it for the 50 hour service soon. So, if draining the fuel doesn't work, I may go ahead and have them come get it.

What say ye?

Thanks,

BR

It sound's like your fuel pump lost prime. I'm not familiar with your machine. Does your manual tell you how to bleed the fuel system. I'd try that before you call the dealer .

Re: 2615 4WD won\'t start

bama,

Bad fuel or no fuel. If you never ran it real low, it shouldn't be air in the lines, but it is a consideration.

The fuel filter should be very clear and not dark. It sounds like polluted fuel, either water or gas, or whatever. I'd drain the tank completely, clean (or preferably change) the filter, then purge the lines going forward with the fresh fuel, then crank her up.

When you empty the fuel from the fuel bowl into a clean glass jar, can you see a "vinegar and oil" effect? If so, you've found the problem.

Re: 2615 4WD won\'t start

Thanks, Dave.

I've never put anything but deisel in the tank. But, as I said, it is possible that some moisture got in the can. I've never ran it very low. I don't think it's ever been below 1/4 tank. Draining the tank and bleeding the lines will be my next plan of action. Hopefully, I'll have time tomorrow evening.

Thanks,

BamaRob

Thanks for the feedback. I'll check the manual.

Are you sure your fuel valve didnt get shut off by accident? It happened to me once after some of the grandkids were here and had shut it.

That's the first thing I checked. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I still haven't looked back at the manual, though. Is the one on the back where the line comes out of the tank into the filter the only shutoff valve? I checked that one and it was in the open position.

Re: 2615 4WD won\'t start

I went out this evening and drained the tank. It was much worse than I imagined (but not nearly as bad as it could have been). I drained approximately 1 quart of water before it turned red! I went ahead and drained it almost completely empty to make sure I had gotten all of the water. I left maybe 1/2 gallon of fuel in the tank. Took the bowl off and cleaned the filter. After priming the bowl and replacing the filter, I tried cranking it. After a few turns of the starter, it finally fired and started running rough. After running for 15-20 seconds it smoothed out and ran like it always has. I went ahead and let it run until it got warm and cleaned up some around my burn pile.

I think I dodged a bullet on this one. I'm really dumbfounded as to how that much water got in the tank. I don't *think* anyone would have purposely sabotaged my tractor. But it makes you wonder. I definitely will not be using that fuel can anymore. I'm really thinking the fuel can is to blame. It's one of the blue 5 gallon cans with the pull out spout in the top (common to hydraulic fluid and such). I think it must be cracked around the pull out spout and, having set out in the weather, water slowly seeped in. The ironic part is, I actually bought a new fuel can about a month ago, but still had a couple gallons in the blue can.

I only have about 7 hours until my 50 hour service. I'll make sure to tell the service guys to give the fuel system a good going over. Is there any potential permanent damage that I should look out for? It seemed to run fine with plenty/normal power.

Thnaks,

Re: 2615 4WD won\'t start

Bama,

Not to worry. This is a common issue we see in the spring, often with very careful people, and sometimes nobody ever figures out how the fuel got polluted. I've never seen any damage from a little episode like yours. Good job in fixing it!
