I was asked if I could get a Yanmar tractor to run again. I assume it is a 276D, I have seen it from a distance in person. It has an electrical problem, the symptoms are "like a dead battery" yet the owner installed a new battery and it still does the same. Hasent ran in 5 months supposably. My assumption is a bad ground, I have experience with that and it is pretty simple to fix. But if this is not the problem, where will I go next? The wiring on my 169D is kinda a pain to access, will the 276D be similar? After the ground is checked, i would assume to trace from there to the ignition switch, then too the solenoid. Will the solenoid on the 276 be in a similar spot as my 169d? I am kinda in a position where I have to fix it, it is to clean up a concrete mess on a job-site. So opinions, ideas, welcome. :)

I dunno but I just saw a 276 on Craigslist. (Northern California). It might be worth a phone call to see if the seller happens to be friendly and helpful.

I think that is an extremely rare model, in the US. Good luck finding specific help. But troubleshooting a starting problem should be routine, generic, same as the other threads on here have discussed. It's an older model so all the guts should be out where you can see them, and trace wires. Worst case, tow start it and go clean up that spilled concrete! :D

check and make sure you have good 12v at the starter, ensure the wiring off the starter is also good. then see if you have power at or around the ignition if you can get to it. i wonder if the 276's have clutch safety switches?

According to the parts list the 276 has both a clutch safety switch and a pto safety switch.

Ernie has good eyes! It's not a YM276. The Nebraska tractor test page has a photograph of their machine, and its exhaust is on the right hand side of the tractor. Is it a YM2700? That's the only one I found in my brief looking with a left hand side exhaust stack.

After you have checked all the cables, the barbarian way to skip all the diagnosis (and the stress of getting to the wiring) is to stick a screwdriver between the battery cable to the starter and the start circuit connection on the starter solenoid. If everything is in working order, you'll get some sparks and the starter will engage. Make sure the tractor is in neutral! This is another one of those things that I've done that I almost certainly shouldn't...

A little bit better way is to use a piece of jumper wire (10 gauge or so works pretty well) to the solenoid. Or fix it so the key switch works, I guess.

Will the powershift work to pull start? Does the pump run if the tires spin, or does it use the engine to spin the pump? I've never tried this.

Like California said, the basics should be pretty simple. Fixing it correctly might be a nuisance and tough, but you'll be able to get it fired up with a bit of tinkering.

Thanks guys for all the help. :) It also is a possibility that it may be a 226, i am going by what I saw from a distance, I didnt get to actually see the model number. I will let you guys know how it goes when I get it done. :)
