please help. I just got myself a 284le and i was digging with the loader in 4wd, there was a clunk and I was stuck with no 4wd. Where should I start?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Check the engagement lever it could have slid or jumped out of gear, Look it over for broke stuff.

Raise the front tires off the ground with the loader and rotate the front wheels slowly in both directions. They should be smooth and the opposing wheel will rotate the opposite direction. If that is smooth then possible you lost the bearings in the drive shaft. Take the rubber cover loose from the drive shaft and slide it clear. You will notice that each end has ball bearings that fit on each end of the shaft that are known to sacrifice or fall out on occasion. This would be an easy and inexpensive fix. It is harder to describe this thenit is to just see it! Good luck.

Most of the time the snap ring on the 4x4 shaft breaks which allows the coupler to move back enough for the balls to fall out, pull the driveshaft make sure you are on a surface that you can find the balls ,because when you collapse the 4x4 shield they will fall out.Call me if you have any questions

Check John's tractor site. He has my repair posted from when I lost my 4WD. It was not the ball bearings on the drive shaft. Jack up one front wheel and try to spin it with the tractor in 4 wd, then do the other wheel. If you hear a click and it turns, you may need to tear it apart. Not too bad, just follow the pictures.

I am not traveling much now as my father is fighting cancer. Once this is over, we plan on doing some trips. I will make it a point to get there and look you up. Could you post a picture of that assembly. Is it an upgrade, or just all the parts preassebled?

It's just a assembly, bolts to the axle housing, put the wheel and lug nuts on and your ready to go.I have a pic on my parts site also.By the time you buy all the gears, bearings, gaskets, the cost is not far from the assembly and alot easier to install.
